The fashion dos and don’ts of dropping your kid off at school

Back to school is slowly approaching. And that means your kids will likely be spending hours in front of the mirror deciding what to wear for the big day. Although you certainly don’t have to make as big a deal out of what you wear to drop them off, here are some dos and don’ts of mom attire to keep in mind.

Do remain casual

It’s happened to all of us at one point or another. You start to think about what you want to wear, and eventually you get too excited and wind up in a glossy dress and heels when such attire doesn’t suit the occasion at all. When picking out your outfit, keep reminding yourself of what you’re getting ready for. Think of it as “casual chic” or “business casual.” If it isn’t something you would wear on a casual coffee date or a day at the office, it’s likely not your best option.

Don’t underdress

Sure, you don’t want to look too over-the-top, but you also don’t want to appear as though you’ve rolled out of bed, thrown on yesterday’s wrinkled dress and hopped in the car. By taking a little bit of time the night before to pick out what you want to wear and giving yourself enough time to get ready in the morning, you can make sure you show up at the drop-off point looking clean, professional and like you’re up for Stylish Mother of the Year.

Do play up the top

If your child is little and needs to be walked into class, you may get a little more air time. But for parents of teens and tweens, you’ll more than likely be doing a quick drop-off and then drive away. A five-second wave to some parents or other kids you recognize may be all you get. So be sure to play up your top, as it may be the only part of your style people will get to fully see and appreciate. Something along the lines of Sears’ Jessica Weekend pleated-front batwing tee is bright, eye-catching and certainly stylish (sears.ca, $24.99). And definitely have fun dressing up your look with a noticeable necklace and earrings, such as ALDO’s Anesia jewellery (aldoshoes.com, $15.00).

Don’t show too much skin

Of course you want to seem like the fun, with-it mom, but wearing anything too reavealing won’t help you with that goal. More than likely your child might have to spend the next little while deflecting comments about his cleavage-baring or short-short-wearing mom, which isn’t fun for anyone. So make a choice that you and your child both can feel good about.

Do have fun with it

It’s not as though you’re walking a runway for an hour, here. You might spend a few minutes talking to a couple of other parents you recognize or perhaps running your wee one into a new classroom setting, but for the most part it will be a quick encounter. So don’t be afraid to have a little bit of fun with your selection; maybe sport something you wouldn’t normally consider.

Don’t care too much

When all is said and done, picking out the perfect outfit to drop off your child on the first day of school isn’t going to make or break how she, her friends, the teachers and the other parents think of you for the rest of the year. It’s simply an opportunity for you to have some fun with your look, so don’t stress!
