5 Fall scents you should try

Well, this is autumn, ladies! Our frilly skirts are done with and so are our grassy, fresh, light perfumes. Fall calls for stronger scents with lasting power, something that will comfort you and intrigue a stranger, yes?

Fabulous fragrances for fall

Sure, the heat waves may have left us, but fall is here! Welcome gem-tone colours and rich, glorious perfumes that summer just can’t handle.

This is our pick of five perfumes to experience this fine autumn season. Stop by your local Shoppers Drug Mart, The Bay, Sears or maybe even Sephora to smell ’em out and see which one suits you best.

The descriptions are divided between official, meaning as described by the fancy perfuming people, and layman’s terms, meaning described by and for normal people. Evaluate both for a fuller understanding of the scent that catches your eye.

Omnia Amethyste by Bvlgari

Official biznaz: This scent comes in a lovely (and iconic) lilac Bvlgari bottle and is described as “a new floral fragrance inspired by the precious iridescence of the amethyst: The essence of Omnia Amethyste is as precious and delicate as the scent of iris and rose gardens caressed with the morning dew.” The perfume boasts notes of green sap, pink grapefruit, iris flower, Bulgarian rosebud, heliotrope and solar wood.

Layman’s terms: The perfume is quite potent. It is sweet, flowery and has wood undertones to it that are not overwhelming. It’s pleasant and very ladylike, but allowing it to permeate all your belongings is discouraged, since it’s a powerful scent. It will keep you feeling warm and cheerful as the winds bear down — fall ain’t got nothin’ on this. We’d recommend it to all the city girls, young subway riders and tough gals with a hidden femininity.

Very Irresistible Givenchy by Givenchy

Official biznaz: This beauty comes in a sleek, clear bottle decorated with a pink gradient. The perfume is described as “an homage to Givenchy’s early days when fashion and cinema were intertwined, Very Irresistible Givenchy unites the elegant tradition of French style with the energy and pop-culture pizzazz of American film. Bursting with roses and infused with star anise and verbena leaf.” The notes include centifolia rose, peony rose, fantasia rose, passion rose, emotion rose, verbena leaf and star anise.

Layman’s terms: This is a scent for an older woman or a brave young woman. The perfume requires a certain level of confidence because it is quite strong. It’s a scent your mother or even your grandmother would wear — the scent of the past, pleasantly remodelled for modernity. Flowery, woodsy and slightly musky, this scent is long-lasting and will serve you well this autumn. It’s a statement perfume; don’t be afraid of it.

Love, Chloe by Chloe

Official biznaz: The perfume comes in a simple beige flask-like bottle and is described as “a celebration of radiant, generous and spontaneous femininity. Its fine, powdery scent is contagious, a beauty that is free and graceful.” The beautiful notes of this perfume are orange blossom, pink pepper, iris, lilac, hyacinth, wisteria blossom, powdery musks, talc and rice powder.

Layman’s terms: This perfume is very light and sweet, quite universal for any age demographic. It’s not too overwhelming and will complement the scents the autumn season brings with it. It’s almost comparable to a flower latte (we just invented them) — it brings the same degree of comfort and femininity. We recommend this for any chic, delicate and confident woman. It’s a lovely perfume, for sure!

Oh, Lola! by Marc Jacobs

Official biznaz: Marc Jacobs is famous for his extravagant and imaginative perfume bottles, and this one is no exception. The scent is described as “flirtatious, charming and sparkling with lighthearted personality, this fragrance leaves you flirting with your senses! It bursts open with a bright and whimsical effervescence.” The notes include raspberry, vanilla, peony, pear and cyclamen.

Layman’s terms: OK, this perfume is sexy; there’s no doubt about that. The sweetness is irresistible, and the vanilla definitely makes this a scent for fall. This perfume is for confidence or even self-assurance. It’s for any woman who’s not afraid to be the recipient of overt attention, no age restriction imposed. It’s very sweet, so if you’re a lover of cleaner, woodsy smells, this ain’t for you. We recommend this perfume for any hard-core feminist — show it off!

Balenciaga Paris by Balenciaga

Official biznaz: This puppy comes in a simple, elegant bottle, and the scent is described as “a lovely paradox, a fragrance full of light and balanced with dark apertures.” The notes are violet leaf, pepper, cedarwood, patchouli and vetiver.

Layman’s terms: This perfume is delicious and sexy. You are immediately hit with the scent of the violet leaf, and then it fades into the woodsier notes. This perfume is rich, rich, rich! It will attract attention because it’s so foiiine — a frangrance for a powerful woman who has a liking for the sweet thangs. The perfume is long-lasting, which is great for autumn. We would not recommend this scent for a youth — the intricacies would just get lost.
