5 Ways to keep your hair healthy this winter

We already have to deal with dry skin, irritated eyes and chapped lips; hair should be the least of our worries! Here are a few quick tips for keeping your hair healthy this fine (albeit incredibly cold) winter.

Through the ages, Canadians have shown extraordinary resilience in the harsh winters of the Great White North. Yet somehow we never learned how to take care of our hair in these sub-zero temperatures (which are a-comin’).

If your hair feels like a pile of hay or a twig nest during the cold season, a quick perusal of these tips may do you some good. Yes? Yes.

1

No Ms. Hothead

The idea that during the driest period of the year you can still abuse your hair as if you’re back in the savannah of summer is nonsensical. The air is dry; hence, your hair is a desert. Don’t go and set it on fire!

The use of heated hair tools like flat irons, curling irons and blow-dryers should be minimized to occasions of dire necessity. So basically, unless it’s a Christmas party or your birthday, go au naturel.

2

Go dirty

“Ick” factor aside, the natural oils your skin produces are so good for the health of your mane, they’re borderline magic! During the winter, take it easy on the hygiene, and avoid washing your hair every day. We’re not recommending you sprout a greasy pile of dirt on your head, but shampooing only three times a week won’t kill you. The oils will protect your hair from the harshness of the Arctic-like weather conditions.

3

Mask it

This is like a body juice cleanse, but for the hair. Every once in a while, treat your hair to a mask for deep conditioning. You can either grab one at your local drugstore or make one at home.

At home, combine two eggs and 5 tablespoons of olive oil, slap it on your head for 15 minutes, then rinse it out with cold water. Or use a blend of 3 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 of honey, leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse. You can also mix a tablespoon of honey, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the flesh of a whole avocado, leave the mask on for 20 minutes, and rinse it out. Experiment to see which one works for you!

4

Keep it hidden

Finally, don’t tease Father Winter. If you’re running around with your hair flapping about in the northern winds, the damage will be done! Tuck your hair under your scarf or into your hat to protect it from the elements. And never run out of the house with wet hair; it’s like follicular suicide! Keep it hidden until you’re enveloped in the warmth of the great indoors.

5

Damage control

No matter how hard you try, your hair will probably get damaged at some point. While it’s always hard to say goodbye to an inch or two of hair, it must be done for the greater good! During the winter, get regular trims to prevent further damage to your beautiful locks! Split ends combined with the dry air of the season will wreak havoc on your hair, so curb it with a snip. Simple enough, no?

Don’t let the winter season bully your hair. Take a stand! Let us know which tips worked for you and if you have any suggestions!
