Christmas dough ornaments
Makes about 20 ornaments
No one wants to spend a fortune on Christmas ornaments that are going to sit in boxes for 11 months of the year. But you also don’t want your special tree to seem underdressed around holiday time. Strike the perfect balance by creating attractive yet simple dough ornaments that can be made for next to nothing. Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
Directions:
Combine the flour and salt in a bowl.
Slowly add in the water and olive oil with one hand while combining with the other.
Knead the dough thoroughly until it comes together.
Cover it in plastic wrap, and let it sit for 20 minutes.
Cover a large cutting board with waxed paper.
Roll out the dough evenly until it’s between 1/8–1/4 of an inch thick.
Use cookie cutters of your choosing to cut out shapes. If the dough sticks to the waxed paper, wiggle it a little with the cookie cutter in place to loosen it up. Brush off any loose, hanging dough from the the shapes. Place each cut-out shape on a baking tray.
Using a wooden skewer, gently poke a hole in the top of each shape.
Let the dough sit for 48 hours so it can harden fully. Flip the shapes over every 12 hours (morning and night, for example) to make sure both sides dry evenly.
Using gold, silver or paint the colour of your choosing, paint one side of each ornament. Leave them to dry, then paint the other sides, and let them dry.
Pull a piece of ribbon through each hole, and tie it in a bow. You’re done!
