Memorable Mother’s Day gifts

Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for your mom or hoping to get the perfect gift yourself, we all want something from the heart on Mother’s Day. Here, three real moms share the favourite gift they received for Mother’s Days past and why it meant so much to them.

Teri

“When my boys were 16 and 9 years old, they each gave me a pony pack [six-pack] of flowers for my garden. They decorated the pony packs with signs on popsicle sticks. My youngest had traced and cut out the shape of his hands and coloured them and stuck them into the pony pack on the popsicle sticks. The messages were of love and a promise to use their hands to plant them wherever I wanted, and they did. Last year I decorated a pony pack with painted popsicle sticks as an example of how cute real flowers for the garden can be with a little decoration. So much better than cut flowers that die, and especially nice when they plant them.”

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to show mom you love her. Just spend a little time and creativity, as Teri’s story shows. If your mom is a fan of flowers, pick up her favourite bouquet from the store, or go that extra step and plant her a garden full of her fragrant favourites.

Teena

“My husband bought me a picture of a rural English garden for Mother’s Day one year. I love English gardens. Ours is a second marriage, and that was the first Mother’s Day of our marriage, and he knew how much I valued the picture the kids had given me [a picture of an old hat lying on the sand], and I think he went with a picture because he knows I love to have meaningful things hang around me as I work in my house or office. He was right!”

It’s amazing what surrounding ourselves with things that make us happy can do for our moods. If your mom or wife loves to look at beautiful things, why not get her that art piece she’s been eyeing for years. If that’s not really her thing, a trip to the museum would be a wonderful way to show you care.

Lorrie

“The most special gift I ever received was last year from my 7-year-old daughter Annie. I am a professional artist, and so it was very meaningful when she spent several hours creating this portrait of me that happened to include a full glass of wine. Her understanding of what Mommy needed was so perfect it brought tears to my eyes — tears of laughter, that is!”

Pictures say a thousand words, and sometimes laughter is the best thing. A great gift for mom could be to have a professional portrait drawn of her or the whole family.

Alternatively you can give her a package from a local photographer so she can get some fun and amazing photos to adorn her walls.
