6 Beauty treatments from your fridge or pantry

You don’t have to spend mega bucks on beauty treatments. We’ve trawled the internet and asked our readers for some of the best do-it-yourself treatments using products you’ll likely find in your fridge or pantry.

1

Say goodbye to bird’s nest hair

Honey

For frizz-free hair, add a tablespoon of liquid honey to a litre of water in a spray bottle. Apply evenly through hair after shampooing to tame flyaway ends. Rinse thoroughly.

Olive oil

Use olive oil to defrizz your dry hair. Comb the oil through the ends of your hair, wrap your hair in cling film, and after 15 minutes, rinse it out.

Coconut oil

Use coconut oil in place of hair conditioner. After shampooing, work the coconut oil through the ends only. Note: Use sparingly, otherwise it can be a nightmare to get out. Leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing well.

Lemon juice

Squeeze a lemon, and add the juice to your shampoo and conditioner to tame the frizz factor.

Eggs

Sick of paying top dollar for hair conditioner? Head for the fridge and grab an egg. It’s very important to rinse it out with tepid water, as hot water will cause the egg to cook in your hair.

2

Don’t fry in the sun

Coconut oil is believed to be the best natural oil you can put on your skin. It’s been used for thousands of years and speeds healing, and it also protects against sun damage and doubles as a moisturizer, according to Dr. Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D., author of The Coconut Oil Miracle.

Can’t wear sandals because of
embarrassing cracked heels?

Add sea salt to almond oil to make a paste. Give your feet a good rub all over, paying particular attention to cracked or dry heels. It might take a couple of weeks to see results. Note: This will not work if you have thick, encrusted skin on your heels. If cracks are deep and bleeding, consult your doctor.

4

Strengthen weak nails that bend and break

For stronger nails, mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil with 6 tablespoons of epsom salts. Gently heat so it’s not scalding, and soak your fingernails for 30 minutes. The mixture is reusable, so store it in the fridge for when you need it.

5

Battle cellulite

Who knew that the secret to getting rid of cellulite was right in your kitchen cabinet? Stop buying expensive creams with big promises and make your own cellulite-reducing scrub at home. This DIY beauty product is made with olive oil and coffee grounds.

Get rid of dark circles under your eyes

According to dermatologist Dr. Frances Jang, raw potatoes placed on your eyes can help soothe tired, puffy eyes. Dark circles are the telltale signs that your eyes need some attention. Potatoes contain an enzyme that helps lighten dark circles. Leave the slices on your eyes for about 15 minutes, and rinse with cool water when you’re done.
