DIY bath salts

Instead of splurging on tiny store-bought containers of bath salts, make your own! You get to experiment with different scents, colours and types of salt, because you’re in control.

Choose your ingredients

Before you get started, you have to decide what you want to get out of your bath salts. This mixture is based on Epsom salts (you won’t have to harvest them yourself, we promise!), but you can add sea salts to the mixture as well.

You can also add colour, essential oils and dried aromatic plants to make a full-bodied bath salt mixture. Choose them based on the desired result (exfoliation, relaxation, etc.).

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Epsom salts
  • 1/2 cup sea salt or Himalayan salt
  • Essential oils (lavender, eucalyptus, etc.)
  • Food colouring
  • Herbs (lavender, rosebuds, etc.)
  • 1 large Mason jar

Directions:

  1. You can create the mixture in either a bowl or a resealable plastic bag, the latter being a neater method. Pour both your salts into the bowl (or bag), and mix them well.
  2. If you would like to add colour to the mix, add it now, and stir until you achieve the desired effect.
  3. Add the essential oils. We recommend no more than 10 drops (you don’t want it to be overpowering). Toss in the herbs at this point too. Mix well.
  4. We suggest laying out the bath salt mixture on a parchment paper-lined baking tray to dry for a few hours before transferring it to the jar — it prevents clumping.
  5. Transfer your newly created bath salt to the Mason jar, and marvel at your DIY capabilities!

Tips

Experiment with different scents and herbs — you’ll be surprised by the countless combinations! — but be aware that certain oils and extracts might cause skin irritation.
