Say no without being guilt-ridden
You’re not a bad person for saying no to someone if what they have asked you to do is beyond your capabilities or makes you feel over-burdened and stressed out.
Try these responses next time someone asks you to do something you don’t want to do
- Use flattery: “You are so much better at that than I am” or “I couldn’t possibly manage to do that as well as you.”
- When they try to guilt you into doing something you don’t want to do, pull out the “I’m sorry you feel that way, but…” Add an excuse.
- Avoid being pressured into it by standing firm and being direct. For example, “No, thank you. I’m quite happy sitting here” or “No, thanks. I’ve had more than plenty to eat.”
- And if they keep nagging, it’s time to cut them off with the good old “I don’t mean to be rude, but I think I’ve made myself clear.”
