Why not make Valentine’s Day extra sweet by treating that special someone with DIY heart-shaped sugar cubes to accompany their morning cup of coffee or tea? This is an amazingly simple tutorial that requires only a couple of ingredients and a few steps. You can also modify it to different colours, shapes and sizes.
Valentine’s Day sugar cubes
Yields 18 cubes
Supplies:
- 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon water
- Food colouring
- Heart-shaped candy or chocolate mould (or other variations)
Instructions:
Combine the sugar and water
In a mixing bowl, measure 1/2 cup of white granulated sugar, and add 1 teaspoon of water.
Create a mixture
Stir together the sugar and water with a spoon. The mixture should have a damp, sand-like texture.
Add colour
Add colour to the mixture by adding a small drop of red food colouring and mixing it evenly with a spoon to create a light pink tone. If you want to create variations in hue of the same colour, start by using a small amount of food colouring, then work your way up to a darker shade.
Fill the mould
Spoon a small amount of the sugar mixture into each mould cavity. Use your finger to pat down the sugar and to wipe off any excess from the mould. Ensure each cavity is filled and has a flat surface.
Remove the sugar cubes from the mould
A trick to dry the sugar cubes more quickly is to put the whole tray into the microwave for approximately 15 to 20 seconds. This will remove the moisture from the wet mixture. After removing the tray from the microwave, gently place a piece of parchment paper over it. Flip the tray upside down onto your table surface to allow the cubes to dislodge from the cavities and onto the parchment paper.
Let the sugar cubes dry
Let the sugar cubes dry at room temperature or in the fridge until they’re solid enough to handle, about 15 minutes or so.
Final product
100 per cent sweet and yummy!
Tip:
These can be stored away and used at a later time.
