How to style your pear-shaped body and do those curves justice

Styling a pear-shaped body

Focus attention upward if you want to even out your proportions. Pear-shaped women may choose to focus attention on the upper half of their pear-shaped body by choosing slim, fitted tops, crop tops, button-down shirts and cardigans. Embellish around the neck. Shirts and dresses with embellished necklines naturally draw the eye upward toward the slimmest part of a pear-shaped body. Layer it up. Layering garments can balance a pear-shaped body by adding visual interest to the top half of the body.

“For the pear-shaped figure, separating tops and bottoms are ideal. You can choose the most flattering item for each part of your body. Pants with some stretch in curvy cuts like a boot cut or the many denim brands catering specifically to that fit are a pear-girl’s dream. Make sure you know your waist to hip ratio to get the best style for you,” explains Mariana Leung, founder, editor and fashion blogger at Ms. Fabulous.

Go for an A. A-line dresses and tops emphasize the upper body while slimming wider hips characteristic of a pear-shaped body. “The number one rule, of course, is to find a dress that fits you properly,” says Leung. “Next, if you have a distinct body shape, look for specific details that flatter that type. For a pear shape, fit and flared dresses skim the hips (and are fun to twirl in).”

Wide is good. Keep the hems of pants, skirts and dresses wide to visually balance a pear-shaped body. Pointy-toed shoes with wide-hemmed pants will elongate your legs. Get a little structure. Structured pants offer a great fit, especially those that skim the hips and thighs of a pear-shaped body. Avoid flashy embellishments like cargo pants, funky pockets or embroidery. But, adds Leung, “Bold accessories like a statement necklace or earrings are great for balancing the smaller top with generous hips.”
