A to Z of style

Trends — you can’t live with them, and you can’t live without them. The key to making them work for you? Understanding what the most popular trends on the horizon are and then deciding which will most easily meld with your current closet wares. Want to know more about getting through spring/summer 2014 in style? Here’s our A-to-Z guide of the season’s top trends.

A = Athletic ensembles

If you’re the kind of lady who dreams of wearing sweats to the office, then this trend is for you (and you probably have Stella McCartney to thank for that). Hopping on this athletic trend is all about wearing high-tech fabrics (think sweat-wicking, microfibres, etc.) that have been crafted into sartorially smart office wear, like blazers or T-shirts. (Gap, $70)

B = Bouquet (of flowers)

Florals are always in, especially for spring, but this year they’re bigger, bolder and brighter. Expect to see them on everything from tees and pants to skirts and suits. Big blingy rings are a great way to wear them in accessory form, as is a bold statement necklace. (Urban Outfitters, $60)

C = Comfy sweatshirts

Cozy hoodies have gone luxe thanks to designers like Alexander Wang (holler!). Adorned with bold prints, the shirts work well for day and night (simply pair with trousers, and later, slip into jeans). (The Bay, $55)

D = Deluxe denim

Think denim has to be dark, straight and floor length to be trendy? Think again. This season, anything goes with this wearable textile, from ripped and torn to baggy and boyfriend. Pair with heels to dress the look up or with flats (the “it” shoe for spring/summer) for something that’s a bit more relaxed or dressed down. (Zara, $55)

E = Eye-popping prints

Chevrons! Triangles! Squares! Any and every print is being added to shirts and pants alike in big and bold colours (mainly the primaries of yellow, red and blue). To ensure you don’t overdo something so vibrant, pair the biggest and boldest accessories with something more muted, like black cigarette pants or a white tee. (Joe Fresh, $99)

F = Full skirts

We’ve been swooning over the full skirts we saw walking the runways last fall, and finally — finally — now that the weather’s warmed up, it’s time to wear them. Flowy, ethereal and very, very ’50s-’60s, this look is sweet yet sophisticated. Pair with a leather jacket to add a bit of spice to the ensemble. (Banana Republic, $100)
