S = Sneakers
Someone up in fashion heaven must have heard our plea to kick the trend of sky-high heels to the curb, because guess what! Spring/summer is all about the flat. Sneakers, ballerinas, wedges — you name it. The flatter your footwear, the better. (ALDO Shoes, $50)
T = The T shape
Boxy clothing is back, and we’re all over the trend’s forgiving nature. From A-line dresses that gracefully drape the shoulders and then flow out down toward the knee to square-like shirts that can be paired with baggy boyfriend jeans, this look is all about relaxing to the max. (eluxe.ca, $300)
U = Updated, modern jewels
This is the time to have some fun with your accessories. Update your arm party by adding something that’s shimmery (think iridescent) or totally punk rock (go for studs). Ear cuffs are a thing (if you’re willing to go that far into “edge wear”), and mid-finger rings will add bling to many a hand. (jcrew.com, $170)
V = Very bedazzled
Why update your jewellery box when you can wear some added sequins or sparkles on your ensembles instead? (Banana Republic, $95)
W = White everything!
This is one of those trends that’s almost always a thing when the weather warms up. Though it’s dangerous in a party environment (red wine plus white dress equals disaster), it can be sophisticated in the right scenario. If you’re wary of this look, then reach for thicker, sturdier materials, like white jeans and cotton white tees. We absolutely love this ensemble when paired with white Chucks. It’s very Parisian. (eluxe.ca, $550)
X = Xtra volume
It’s time to say “no more” to skin-tight clothes and “yes” to oversize everything. Baggy wouldn’t be the right word to describe this trend, largely because the looks, though they have extra volume, are still tailored and made to show off your body. They just do so in a different way. Think boyfriend jeans paired with a tucked-in yet loose T-shirt, or a baggy T-shirt mixed with pencil pants (that aren’t stick-to-your-skin stiff). (Urban Outfitters, $70)
Y = It’s all about you
You know what? This summer, if there’s a trend you don’t feel comfortable wearing, then don’t wear it. Fashion is moving toward being more approachable and definitely more wearable. Wear what suits your body and what you feel most confident in. That’s a surefire way to feel sexy this summer. (Old Navy, $15)
Z = Zeroing in on cultures
Globalization and the all-pervasive internet have given us a chance to explore the way other cultures live; it’s also exposed us to their fashions. And on more than one runway for spring/summer, we saw print, colour and textile influences from all over the world. Expect to see lots of fur, Aztec prints, fringe, colours from Asia and unique fabrics like hemp. (Joe Fresh, $19)
