Looking for a few labels to love this Canada Day? We’ve come up with a list of a few of our favourites — all of which are owned (or were created) by fellow Canucks.
Roots
This famed label — and its iconic beaver logo — is one of Canada’s mainstay brands. Open for business in 1973 thanks to a tiny shop in midtown Toronto, the company has since expanded to over 100 stores, is available in more than 50 countries online and was the chief designer for Team Canada’s Olympic apparel. We can’t get enough of their supple leathers and cozy sweats. (Roots, $68)
The Bay
As North America’s longest continuously operating business, the Hudson’s Bay Company (named after the large body of water in Northern Ontario, where it got its start) is Canada’s go-to department store. In operation since 1670, the brand is known for its colourful sartorial creations, including its classic striped blankets and bags. The company has recently forayed into high fashion by bringing Kleinfeld’s to Canada and opening a luxury floor called The Room. (The Bay, $495)
Joe Fresh
Created by Canada’s fashion sweetheart, Joseph Mimran, Joe Fresh has become one of the most successful businesses in the land. Not only does the company have a deal to distribute its clothing through Real Canadian Superstores (Canada’s grocery outpost), but it recently expanded into the U.S. and has aggressive plans to go international by 2015. (Joe Fresh, $20)
Here are a few more of our favourite Canadian designers >>
Shoppers Drug Mart’s Quo
There’s nothing better than being able to find inexpensive yet high-quality makeup products and accessories at your local pharmacy, and Quo is a perfect example of what we’re talking about. The reliable and delightfully on-trend line — created by mega Canadian chain Shoppers Drug Mart — offers everything a beauty junkie looks for in products. (Quo, prices vary)
Canada Goose
Though this brand is no longer exclusively owned by Canadians (thanks, Mitt Romney), we will always have a heart-on for its jackets and vests. Founded in 1957, the iconic label has been worn by almost every big-name celebrity. Even the royals wear Goose — Prince Harry recently donned a jacket from the company on his trip through Antarctica. (Sporting Life, $325)
Winners
Another example of an all-Canadian brand that was snatched up by an American organization (TJX Companies), Winners is the ultimate destination for fashion lovers looking for an incredible deal on everything from clothing to home decor accessories. The chain even carries luxe products from designers like Kate Spade. There are over 300 stores across the country.
Lululemon
Lululemon has had a rough go over the past while — the company’s CEO made some ridiculously offensive comments about women, and then there was the whole see-through pants incident — but the Vancouver-based brand is still a go-to for many thanks to its stretchy athletic wear. It was one of the first labels to cater to women who want to get active. Today the company’s products can be spotted on women all over the world, including in Hong Kong and New Zealand. (Lululemon, $128)
President’s Choice (PC) Home
Looking to add a little oomph to your home? Do as decor lovers do, and head to your Real Canadian Superstore to snatch up some of the latest items from President’s Choice Home (a.k.a. PC Home). An offshoot of the famed President’s Choice brand brought to Canada by Loblaw Companies Limited (also the company that works with Joe Fresh), PC Home’s products are timely, on trend and incredibly well priced. They’re also durable, meaning you won’t have to replace a plate or dish after one season. (Real Canadian Superstore, $13)
