Harnaam Kaur is making headlines for being featured in #Project60 and having one of the best beards in the world. We most certainly agree.

Rarely do we ever come across a story that literally takes our breath away, but this is an extraordinary exception. Harnaam Kaur, a 23-year-old primary school teaching assistant living in Slough, Berkshire, suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome, which causes excessive hair growth.

Her beard started growing when she was only 11 years old, which forced Harnaam to employ countless hair removal methods, all to no avail (the hair grew back too quickly) and made her a focal point of local bullies. At some point, she refused to leave the house, began self-harming and even contemplated suicide. But after being baptised as a Sikh — the religion dictates that body hair should be left to grow — Harnaam has accepted her appearance, beard and all. And you know what? We think Harnaam looks perfect the way she is.

Harnaam is one of the people recently featured in #Project60, a portrait series celebrating the 60 best beards in the world. She is the only woman on the list, which we think is a very powerful statement. We wonder how many of her bullies ever made such a strong assertion without so much as uttering a word. Just look at her!

We have a lot of respect for Harnaam for choosing to accept her body in its natural state and inspiring women the world over to do the same. We’re sure that she still receives looks on the street and is subject to a comment or two, but the fact that she continues to stand her ground is truly commendable. Harnaam is what every woman should aspire to be: fearless. That’s what makes her truly beautiful (plus, she applies liquid liner like a pro).
What do you think? What would you do in Harnaam’s situation?
