This tampon video game created by high school students is a blast

Two high school students in New York City created an amazing video game called Tampon Run, aiming to de-stigmatise menstruation in our society. Clever, no?

Well, this is why women are amazing, people. OK, this is one of the many reasons.

Two New York City high school students, Andrea Gonzalez and Sophie Houser, met over the summer at Girls Who Code — an organisation “working to close the gender gap in the technology and engineering sectors” — and created something beautiful together. The duo crafted Tampon Run, a simple online game following a tiny pixelated woman as she defeats men with the awesome power of tampons. Fear and revere her, mortals!

Tampon Run is not just an amusing game created to make you giggle every time the heroine whips tampons at the dudes; its main purpose is to actually highlight the ongoing stigma surrounding menstruation and, by consequence, tampons.

“It’s strang[e] that our society has accepted and normalized guns and violence through video games, yet we still find tampons and menstruation unspeakable,” reads the introductory message in the game.

Ain’t that the truth? We’re all familiar with the mini panic attacks at the local drug store, when we must purchase our monthly menstrual supplies and the cashier always turns out to be a very attractive man, forced to scan our items with his trembling attractive man hands. Blast you, period! But, really, it should not be a big deal. We bask in the womanly glory of this bloody business every month for most of our lives, we should probably be more comfortable talking about it.

Maybe this game should be a requirement at school to eliminate the negativity? Sounds good to us. What do you think of the idea?
