Furniture store gives $1.5 million in free goods after Ohio State football win

For about 500 lucky people across Ohio and northern Kentucky, last night’s Ohio State win over the Oregon Ducks in the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship bought them a whole lot more than simple bragging rights.

In fact, thanks to OSU’s 42-20 victory, 15 Ohio- and northern Kentucky-area furniture stores will be giving away more than $1.5 million in free furniture.

Morris Furniture, which owns and operates 15 Ashley Furniture HomeStores and Better Sleep Shops in the Dayton, Ohio, and northern Kentucky area wanted to boost sales during its sluggish sales season from the middle of December through Jan. 1. So they came up with a brilliant promotion: If Ohio State won the National Championship game by more than 7 points, any customer who spent $1,999 or more between Dec. 17 and Jan. 1 would have their money refunded.

Go, Buckeyes!

Rob Klaben, vice president of marketing and advertising at Morris Furniture, said the company won’t be out the full $1.5 million, since it had a partner to help support the cost of the deal. But, he added, “It’s not inexpensive to run this kind of promotion.”

Customers who qualify for the refund need to fill out a rebate form in person and present a sales receipt and valid ID. Customers can also opt to get 110 percent of their purchase value in store credit in lieu of a refund.

Here’s more on the furniture store’s huge promotion.
