Tree Change Dolls are giving old Bratz dolls a new life

An eco-friendly artist from Tasmania is giving discarded Bratz dolls a “makeunder” to make them look more like real children — and it’s going down a storm with parents.

Sonia Singh’s “Tree Change Dolls” have gone viral, due to the incredible transformation they’ve undergone. Once Bratz dolls with heavy makeup and provocative clothing, they now have makeup-free faces, natural hair and organic-inspired clothes (sewn and knitted by Singh’s mother).

Singh finds the dolls in the secondhand shops of Tasmania, then repaints and restyles them and creates new feet and shoes. She says on her Tumblr page: “These lil fashion dolls have opted for a ‘tree change,’ swapping high-maintenance glitz ‘n’ glamour for down-to-earth style.” Singh demonstrates this by photographing the dolls climbing trees and playing on swings “the way kids should.”

Singh is in the process of setting up an Etsy shop to sell her Tree Change Dolls. It’s sure to be a huge success. Here are just a few of the comments posted this week on her Facebook page:

“My 5yo says your dolls look like ‘real little girls’… a compliment, indeed!”

“They just look so much… happier, if that makes any sense. They are saying ‘Thank you for rescuing us from being unrealistic portrayals of little girls!'”

“These are the types of dolls I would want my own daughter to play with some day.”

“They even look like they’d be generous, interesting people with ideas and conversation!”

“My daughter’s Elsa and Anna dolls faces could do with this treatment! They’ve got some nice handmade clothes and a tent for camping in already. They got bored living like princesses.”

“Natural, happy looking dolls with minimal makeup and respectful clothing… Great work!”

“Hooray, it’s about time dolls were made to look normal, can you next change Barbie to make her fatter?”

“I love how they each look different, looking into each of their eyes looks like they all have different personalities!”
