Anthony Heywood
Anthony Heywood makes art from waste. He is a UK-based artist and is Principle Lecturer for Sculpture at the University of Creative Arts Canterbury.
Anthony’s works centre on issues to do with the environment, such as with his elephant sculpture, Earth Elephant [photo by Samantha Burns], which is made out of televisions, vacuum cleaners, telephone shoes and other knickknacks.
It was inspired by the African elephants being slaughtered for their ivory tusks, and was on recently show at the world-acclaimed Sculpture by the Sea Bondi 2009. Another interesting piece from Anthony is Pegasus 5, a one tonne electric horse. This sculpture, made out of jewellery, televisions sets, computers, handbags and household appliances, was commissioned by the BBC to feature in their 2008 film adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson’s novel Dustbin Baby.
Anthony Heywood is raising awareness for environmental issues and he is getting rid of some of our waste — definitely a win-win!
