Creating art for the sake of the enviroment

Daniel Clemmett

Daniel Clemmett is an award winning Australian sculptor who grew up in a panel beaters — so it should come as no surprise that he makes sculptures from all kinds of car parts. However, when he finishes a sculpture, you can barely tell that his art was once just the discarded components of a car.

“What started as a utilisation of a wasted resource and highlighting a little-known aesthetic often becomes much more, an ecological premise,” he explains.

“Each viewer brings their own subjective preconceptions of dwindling global resources —  interpretations of carbon crisis paralleled with use of recycled materials.”

Through his art Clemmett also wants to drive a message about the environment. An important principle in his work is recycling, reusing and refining. In fact, this is as important as the theme of his sculpture. One of his sculptures is included in the artsCape Biennial 2010, where he is one of the selected artists.

The world has been here for long time, so maybe we should live a sustainable life to do something to give back to the environment? These artists are, in their own way, leading the way.
