Australia Day rolls around every January 26, bringing with it an opportunity to celebrate everything we love about living in our beautiful country! It’s important to remember that Australia Day is more than just a public holiday: it’s an occasion to get outside and experience the outdoors, spend time with loved ones and enjoy living down under. Here are five things you can do to celebrate in style this Australia Day!
Have a classic Aussie Day BBQ
Gather your family and friends and stage a traditional Australia Day BBQ! There’s nothing more Australian than the sounds and smells of snags and steaks on the grill in summer. If the weather keeps acting up as it has recently and it rains on Australia Day, move the party indoors and have a casual dinner party instead.
Enjoy Sydney Harbour
If you’re in or around Sydney for Australia Day, there’s no better way to celebrate our fine country than by enjoying Sydney Harbour! There will be plenty happening along the harbour fringe at Circular Quay and Darling Harbour, including ferry races, Tall Ships race, jet fighter displays and Australia Day fireworks. If you’re keen to get out on the water, a cruise will give you a perfect view of the action.
Similar Australia Day events are staged throughout Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and other major metropolitan cities.
Celebrate Australia Day at a restaurant
No matter where in Australia you live, the local restaurant precinct is likely to be buzzing on January 26! Most restaurants and bars offer food, drink and entertainment packages for you to celebrate on Australia Day. Although these events can be a little pricey, they’re usually loads of fun, and if you book in early enough you may be able to secure an early bird or group-booking discount. Be sure to factor in your travel plans, as taxis can be hard to come by on Australia Day.
Become an Australian citizen
Around 16,500 people from more than 140 countries broke the Australia Day citizenship record on Australia Day in 2010, when they became Australian citizens in a series of special ceremonies across the country. If you are planning to become a true blue Australian, why not join in on the fun on Australia Day and try to break the record in 2011?
Hold an Aussie Day picnic
If you have children, it may make more sense to celebrate during the day rather than the evening. If this is the case, why not hold an Australia Day picnic at a local park or beach? You may be able to lock down a public BBQ area if you get there early enough, but as they get nabbed pretty quickly, it may be easier to have a picnic so you can pre-prepare all of the food. BBQ chickens, coleslaw, fresh bread rolls and a cheese plate are all you need, along with the some beverages and the summer sun!
