Hairstyles inspired by a young Queen Elizabeth II

The hairstyle is almost as recognisable as the woman herself. Pay homage to Queen Elizabeth II and celebrate her birthday this year with a twist on her elegant ‘do.

When actress Helen Mirren won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the film The Queen, she paid tribute to Her Majesty in her acceptance speech with these words: “For 50 years and more, Elizabeth Windsor has maintained her dignity, her sense of duty and her hairstyle.”

And that just about sums it up. From her colour-coordinated outfits to her regal posture, Elizabeth Windsor has always epitomised grace and class since she first took to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25. Similarly, her hairstyle has hardly changed. Always kept off her face and neck, she has worn it short for decades. In her 20s and 30s she added gorgeous embellishments like glittering jewellery and hairpins, while today she opts for age-appropriate hats. Since her youth she has always embraced her gorgeous, subtle waves.

Whether you have long, medium or short hair, master an equally elegant hairstyle this Queen’s Birthday holiday with these great ‘dos.

For short hair: The twist

You’ll need:

  • Hair styling product
  • Bobby pins
  • Jewelled hairpin

Directions:

  1. Work a small amount of styling product through your strands.
  2. Hold a small section of hair in one hand and twist it with your fingers so it forms a loose curl, then secure it to your head with a bobby pin.
  3. Repeat Step 2 for the rest of your hair until all strands are twisted up into loose, pretty curls.
  4. Tuck a jewelled hairpin into the twists on one side of your head to give the hairstyle a royal finishing touch a la Queen Elizabeth II.

For medium to long hair: The classic chignon

You’ll need:

  • Wide-toothed comb
  • Hair bands
  • Bobby pins
  • Strong-hold hairspray
  • A jewelled accessory, e.g. a tiara

Directions:

  1. Brush your hair with the comb to get rid of any tangles and achieve a knot-free head of hair.
  2. Part your hair down the middle and pull all of your hair to one side. Secure in a low, side ponytail at the nape of your neck with a hair band.
  3. Use one hand to hold the base of your ponytail as you use the other hand to coil the hair around the band into an oval-shaped bun. Tuck the end of the ponytail under the bun.
  4. Leave the end of your ponytail hidden and secure with bobby pins.
  5. Work your way around the edges of the bun with more bobby pins to hold your chignon in place.
  6. Secure with hairspray.
  7. Finish your regal look with some jewelled hairpins, a sparkly headband or go all out with a tiara.
