Craft projects to dress up a baby’s room

From a cute cloud mobile to a comfy cushion for mum, have fun with these simple DIY projects to dress up your baby’s nursery without spending a fortune. Create a cosy, calming space that makes your baby and visitors feel relaxed and welcome.

Cloud mobile

Materials:

• Tailor’s chalk or pencil
• Fabric scraps
• Scissors
• Needle and thread
• Stuffing
• Two wooden dowels
• Hot glue gun or superglue
• String or fishing line

Directions:

1. Fold the fabric scraps in half, draw clouds of various sizes on the material, then cut out two clouds in each size.
2. Pair the cut pieces together with the right sides facing each other to make about eight clouds. (You can have less or more if you wish.) Using your needle and thread, begin to stitch around the outline of your first cloud, leaving a gap of about 5 cm.
3. Fill the cloud with the fabric stuffing, pushing the material through the 5 cm gap. When the cloud is filled, hand-stitch across the 5 cm gap to seal. Repeat for each cloud you’ve cut out.
4. Once you’ve cut and filled all of your clouds, it’s time to attach them to the mobile!
5. Cross your wooden dowels (or use any two horizontal sticks, e.g. skewers, rulers, etc.) and fuse the two pieces together using glue at the centre. You can make it extra secure by tying some string or fishing line around the join.
6. Cut four long pieces of string or fishing line and wind them around each end of each piece of dowel. Attach two clouds to each piece of string using the glue — one cloud should sit at the end and the other should hang further up the piece of string. To keep it interesting, attach the higher-level clouds at different heights.
7. Attach a final piece of fishing line from the centre join of the wooden dowels and hang it from the ceiling. This cute cloud mobile should keep your bub entertained for hours on end!

Cosy cushion

A nice, comfy seat for mum is an essential part of your nursery. No doubt you’ll spend many hours over the next few years rocking your bub back to sleep, reading fairytales aloud and watching your toddler take their first steps.

Materials:

• Cushion insert
• Tape measure
• Fabric
• Scissors
• Iron
• Needle and thread
• Snap-lock clasps
• Embellishments (optional)

Directions:

1. Measure the length and width of the cushion insert you want to cover. Cut a rectangular piece of fabric that’s the width of the cushion and twice as long (adding about 2cm to each side).
2. Fold the fabric in half to form one square, with the two right sides together. Grab the open side that’s opposite the folded side, and fold each of the two pieces of fabric back about 2cm to form a neat edge. Iron to secure. This will essentially help protect the raw edges of the fabric and reduce the risk of fraying.
3. Using the needle and thread (or a sewing machine if you have one), sew around the other three sides of the square, about 2cm in from the outside edge.
4. Turn the cushion cover inside out so that the right sides are facing out, and place the cushion insert in the cover through the open side. Hand-stitch two or three snap-lock clasps along the open side to secure.
5. You can now decorate the cushion however you like — with novelty buttons, other pockets of fabric or paints. Enjoy!
