Household uses for vinegar

The humble bottle of vinegar has been a staple of any well-stocked pantry for hundreds of years. Mostly used for its ability to preserve and flavour food, vinegar comes in handy for a host of nifty uses around the home. You may be surprised at its versatility. SheKnows has compiled the ultimate guide to ways to use it around your house.

Transform once-were-white bras, socks and undies

Aging, greying socks, bras and undies can be whitened and brightened by boiling 1.5 litres of water with 1 cup of white vinegar and soaking overnight.

Remove gross mould and mildew

Mould on ceilings, walls, tiles, shower curtains and outdoor furniture can be removed by spraying vinegar and wiping it off. Most won’t even require any elbow grease.

Make your furniture gleam

Equal parts white vinegar and lemon combine to make a cheap and chemical-free furniture polish. Rub in with a soft cloth and immediately wipe dry.

Clean up crayon graffiti

If little Jimmy has unleashed his inner Van Gogh on the walls, a little white vinegar and a toothbrush should remedy the problem. Try a small test patch before attacking the entire mural to avoid the unlikely case of an adverse reaction.

Clean your loo

Apple cider vinegar is great for unsightly toilet stains. Pour into a spray bottle, go crazy and leave the vinegar overnight for a gleaming white bowl.

Use as weed killer

Spray apple cider vinegar directly on weeds to eliminate them. It doesn’t matter if your pets eat where you have sprayed, apple cider vinegar is also great for getting rid of pesky fleas.

Say goodbye to tummy troubles

If you’ve decided to live on the wild side and indulge in dairy products despite being lactose intolerant, one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a bit of warm water in a shot glass could become your new best friend. Within 10–20 minutes you should be experiencing relief from those guttural gurgles.

Remove cat pee

If your family cat has ever peed inside, you’ll know how pungent the pong is. With equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water, you can eliminate the smell. If the cat has peed on your clothes, add a capful or two into your wash cycle, then hang outside on the clothe sline to air. Cats don’t really like the smell of vinegar so it can also work as a deterrent.

Deodorise the fridge

Left something pongy in the crisper drawer and can’t seem to get rid of the odour? Equal parts vinegar with water will get rid of the smell.
