Bohemify your home with these decorating tips

The bedroom

This is your place of solace, of reflection and of rest so it should be the most relaxed and comfortable room in the house. Avoid clutter in the bedroom by using large vintage-looking suitcases or boxes as storage containers. Create a divine space for sleeping, relaxing and snuggling with your lover by making your bed an inviting and luxurious oasis. Use pillows and throw rugs on the bed to create an eclectic feel and a warm atmosphere. Use lamps and light fittings to create a moody and ultra-relaxed atmosphere come nightfall.

Living area

Use pot plants, cacti and hanging baskets to bring life and colour to your living spaces. Use mismatched coloured furniture like pairing a red coffee table with blue side tables or chairs and use throw cushions to add texture to the living space. Be sure to be brave with patterns and colours, the more contrasting and mismatched they are, the better. Fill this space with your favourite things — a guitar in the corner perhaps, a bookshelf with your favourite books, a wall full of photos of your travels or souvenirs from places once visited. Keep it eclectic, inviting and warm.

The dining room

Why leave the table bare until dinner time when you could have it decorated and looking divine all day? No need to make a big fuss about the table setting though, drape some beautifully-patterned materials as a table runner and place a bright vase full of your favourite flowers in the centre. Scatter the table with some of your favourite vases and bottles of different sizes and shapes and place bunches of feathers in some of them.

Take it outside

Why stop with at the indoor living areas when you can take your bohemian décor outdoors? Hang lanterns of varying shapes and sizes on your porch or balcony. Candlelit lanterns work a treat and bring a charming air to the home at night — great for entertaining or for a candlelit dinner on the weekend. Throw a rug down in the garden, dress the area up with candles and your best porcelain and truly enjoy the weekend with a bohemian-style picnic.

Nooks and crannies

Create warm and inviting spaces in the home by using your space efficiently. Is there a corner in the house that is a bit tired and unloved? Is there a nook near a window that could do with some attention? Place some candles, a lantern, some books and a framed photo on a table and you have officially brought some life to an empty space in the home.

Bathroom

Don’t neglect the bathroom, this is where we enjoy our long indulgent baths, so it’s only fair that we show it the same attention as the rest of the house. Put up black and white photos in large frames, lay out colourful towels and sweet-scented candles and place vintage jars and bottles on the vanity in a variety of colours to spruce the space up.

Get playful

Why not set up a doona tepee in the living room? Or a picnic in the dining room and eat dinner on the floor on soft cushions? Even better, why not set up a bed in the living room and throw a dozen pillows on it so when you want to snuggle up with your lover, there’s no reason you have to make it all the way to the bedroom.
