Are the big, bold colours and chunky metallics of summer still the look of the moment — or are trendsetters paving the way for a new look this autumn?
Gothic is back
Julie Baker has a long and extensive history in the fashion industry, including a stint as the Senior Buyer for the Accessories Department at infamous UK retailer Topshop, followed by a similar role at Marks and Spencer. Now based in Australia and relishing her role as eQUIP’s Buying Controller, Julie says that regardless of whether your personal style is feminine or grungy, you can tailor this season’s modern gothic look to suit you. “Go dramatic with accessories such as cuffs with studs, layered necklaces with spikes, and accessories featuring crosses,” Julie suggests. “Those who want to dabble in the trend with something a little daintier, choose pieces in a combination of gunmetal and gold in geometric silhouettes to stay true to the gothic style.”

Neon knows no bounds
Neons have been around since last winter and continue into 2013, popping up in tops and tights featuring galactic and animal prints, explains Sarah Wilkinson, designer and founder of SanCerre. “For those not brave enough to wear bright, neon fashion, the perfect compromise is to accessorise with it,” Sarah says. “Think bright necklaces, a bright studded handbag or a stack of bangles and bracelets that incorporate varying colours and textures.” Last season’s neons have also been revamped with darker hues — including gunmetal grey and black — which is breathing new, more office-friendly life into the popular style. “A combination of bold colours and dainty gemstones helps you to glam up your everyday work outfit,” Julie adds.
Metallics rule
“Metallic hues across clothing, belts, bags, shoes and jewellery continue to shine this season,” confirms Sarah. “If you’re accessorising with metallics, keep the rest of your outfit relatively plain and let your accessories speak for themselves.” Think tones of copper, rose gold, silver and charcoal and don’t feel the need to go matchy-matchy — an eclectic mix works best with this look. “The good thing about metallics, especially when it comes to jewellery, is that you can layer different pieces — many of which will see you season to season,” Sarah adds.

Sophisticated monochrome
This season’s hottest trend, monochrome, allows you to make a statement while sporting a chic and sophisticated look in black and white. “This trend is easy to follow, right down to your accessories, as you can mix it up with geometric prints, stripes or the latest shapes when it comes to your accessories,” Julie says. “For instance, the Ruby & Kit large tote in black is the key bag shape this season: Pair with a white dress and black blazer to take you from work to dinner.”
