Spring fashion report

It’s a new season and you know what that means: It’s time to update your wardrobe with the latest pieces. Before you collect your credit cards and hit the shops, read our fashion forecast to find out what to buy and what to leave on the rack.

These slouchy shorts are back in a big way, and just in time for summer holidays. Perfect for every girl who’s not a fan of teeny tiny cut-offs, Bermuda shorts are versatile: They can be worn from the beach to the bar, from shopping to lunch. While they are flattering on anyone, you should wear a pair that matches your height: If you’re on the short side, go for a shorter version; if you’re tall, you can rock any length.

Far from risqué, “peekaboo” pieces are fashion-forward, chic and accentuate all the right spots. The easiest way to adopt this trend is to buy one or two dresses with cut-outs. While most designers tend to place their cut outs on the sides, just on or under the ribs, others are creating backless dresses. Both kinds of designs ooze cool. Some very edgy labels are also flogging cut-out pants, which look amazing on leggy models on the runway but aren’t as wearable in everyday life.

Bored of your aviators and plain black sunnies? If you’re going to buy one investment accessory this spring, make it a pair of statement glasses. It seems that every designer is making glasses in all shapes, sizes and colours, but fabulousness is one thing they have in common. It can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of choosing a fun, bright pair of sunnies, but just remember to stick to a shape that suits your face. So, for example, round-faced beauties should go for square glasses, and heart faces should make a beeline for circular shapes.

They’re bold, uncomplicated and very American. Bold stripes have edged out all other patterns in the fashion stakes this spring, and it’s no wonder why. They go with almost anything. Try pairing them with denim when you’re “off duty”, or with navy for a nautical-chic look. If you’re a bit of a fashionista, just wear stripes head to toe — right now, nothing’s cooler than that. The best thing? Stripes of some sort are in every season, so you’ll be able to wear these pieces for years to come.

Leather is a true investment, but it’s definitely worth adding a piece or two to your spring shopping list. Why? Because it’s classic, chic and incredibly versatile. Start your spree with a black leather skirt or dress. When you realise it really does go with everything, branch out a little and experiment with a richly coloured skirt (plums and pinks look great) or a tan vest. To ensure your leather pieces will stand the test of time, avoid buying items that are too fancy and too fashion-forward. Minimalistic shapes are best.

Say goodbye to sequins this spring — beads are having a comeback. After a couple of seasons of OTT details like brocades and fur, it’s refreshing to have beads in the spotlight. They’re far more playful and fun and definitely add a little razzle dazzle to the most simple of outfits. You can either go all out with a beaded dress, or just enjoy a slice of the trend by stocking up on beaded accessories. Necklaces and bracelets are winning choices.

The classic flats are like a pretty horse on a merry-go-round: They come around like clockwork every few seasons and make a statement when they do. While there will always be a time to don your stilettos, it’s so nice to have a stylish footwear option that treats your feet (to a rest, that is). Perfect for both workdays and weekends, the ballet flat is the most versatile shoe you’ll find. Once you’ve got a couple of neutral pairs (black and tan), add some colourful ones to your collection.

It’s official: White is the new black. Sure, you’ll have to be careful if you’re sipping on a glass of red, but what’s fashion without a few risks? This trend has been spotted everywhere from the catwalks to the streets, with celebrities and sartorialists donning the hue from head to toe. It’s stylish, sophisticated, and goes with just about anything. White on white is the freshest take on the trend, but feel free to mix and match rich fabrics (like cashmere, silk and lace) and shades (ivory and cream).
