Kermit the Frog has a real-life doppelgänger! Recently, Gawker shared a post about a new species of frog discovered in Costa Rica that looks surprisingly similar to our favorite green Muppet Show host. While he might not have the signature voice, he certainly has the wide eyes and bright skin tone. If he also plays the banjo, Kermit has got some serious competition.
This real-life Kermit is actually a new species of glass frog called Hyalinobatrachium dianae. Native to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, the frog has bright green skin and giant round eyes that appear white with black oval centers, just like another felt-bodied frog we all know. He also apparently has a distinctive mating call, which I suppose could echo Kermit’s excited screams when he’s announcing a new act.
The first picture of this cute little guy was taken by Brian Kubicki of Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center, who also discovered the new species. He told The Telegraph that the discovery “is a good indicator of the general health of the eco-system.” The frogs are semitranslucent (meaning you can see all their organs when they’re turned upside down), super tiny and delicate. Here’s hoping they have an orange bear friend who can protect them by telling bad jokes that will scare away predators. Take a look at the frog doppelgängers side by side.
All I can say is he’d better make a cameo in the next Muppet movie.
