9 Easy ways to add Moroccan flair to your home decor

Are you ready to go global with your home decor? Give your home a taste of Moroccan style with these fab finds:

1. Moroccan lights

“To achieve a Moroccan flavor, it’s a good idea to use hanging oriental-style lanterns, which are very popular all over the Middle East and North Africa,” says Khadi Baakrime, who is married to a Moroccan and has a Moroccan room in her home.

Author Susan Froetschel agrees. “For a look that is instantly glamorous and mysterious, purchase a Moroccan lamp with intricate metalwork and stained glass,” she says. “It instantly becomes the focal point of any room.

The Blue & Green Moroccan Lantern from Pier 1 Imports is a great find for any budget. The filigree metal frame features intricate details and the textured colored glass lends an air of mystery. (Pier1.com, $45)

2. Moroccan mirrors

“Mirrors play a big part in Moroccan design to reflect plant foliage and light,” says Baakrime, like this Lyons Mirror from Soft Surroundings. Hang it alone in a foyer or at the end of a hallway, or hang several in a row to create a stunning Moroccan headboard. (softsurroundings.com, $179)

3. Moroccan tables

“Small, low, round tables can be covered with bright tablecloths in red, turquoise and green to give the appearance of the small Arabic-style tables that are in wide use,” says Baakrime. “Add floor cushions for casual tea and snacks.”

NYC-based interior designer Keita Turner loves accent tables “made with superior Moroccan craftsmanship,” like this one-of-a-kind, handmade tea table. At just 17.5 inches high, it serves up sophisticated, authentic style. (DotandBo.com, $649)

4. Moroccan poufs

For sitting, award-winning designer Rachel Winokur likes the current pouf trend. “Poufs are very popular today and a great way to add extra seating and a pop of color and texture,” says Winokur. “Buy a fair trade version straight from Marrakech!” (Moroccan-Pouffe.com, $73).

5. Moroccan textiles

“Typically, Moroccan parlors use built-in sofas comprised of ornate carved wood ‘boxes’ with thick padded cushions,” says Baakrime. “These are covered in brightly colored rich brocades. You can achieve the concept by building something, using a daybed or by simply throwing covers over existing furniture.”

Choose from a wide selection of Moroccan-inspired fabrics to create these covers, along with custom bedding, drapes and table linens. (SaffronMarigold.com, prices vary)

6. Moroccan rugs

Tie everything together with the perfect area rug. Winokur suggests buying the real thing directly from Morocco. Here, Hasna Frah, who lives in a village near Marrakech, displays the Azilal Rug she made by hand. (TheAnou.com, $381)

7. Moroccan baskets

The design experts at Wayfair.com say “adding Moroccan flair to your home decor is quite easy. All you need are the right accessories!” Like this IMAX Alice 3-piece Lidded Basket Set (wayfair.com, $197). Hmm, wonder if you can charm a snake out of them!

8. Moroccan accent pieces

How about an I Dream of Jeannie-style ewer? “Large brass ewers that can sit on the floor are typical in Moroccan decor,” says Baakrime. The striking extra-large Copper and Ceramic Ewer by Deconceptshop stands 24 inches tall and is the perfect conversation piece. (Amazon.com, $289)

Increase storage and add interest with a carved chest. The Wunderley Moroccan Bone Coffer is an elaborate way to store blankets, books or even toys. (BeyondStores.com, $261)

9. Moroccan scents

Nothing sets the tone quite like the perfect scent. Fill your room with the aroma of Morocco with a Jubilee Fine Fragranced Candle. You’ll be transported by the exotic blend of spices with warm amber, vanilla and cloves. (LampsPlus.com, $24)
