DIY this adorable tree branch clothing rod for your baby’s nursery

I made this branch clothing rod for one of my clients who is expecting a baby in a few weeks. Yikes, tick tock, DIY amok time! It was based on two facts. One: Baby clothes are super adorable. Two: Parents of newborns already have their hands full taking care of their beautiful baby. So, why not create a hanging rod to display (show off) the adorable baby clothes while making it easy for parents to access the cutie-pie attire (place outside the closet)?

Materials: 

• Branch (I found one right outside in my neighborhood after a storm) 
• Twine (goes with the “nature theme” since most twine is made of hemp or cotton)
• Sander (an electric one is fast and furiously awesome) 
• Polyurethane (seals the deal, um, the branch!) 
• Hooks (get closed ones so there is no slippery sucker moments during installation) 
• Gloves are optional. If you are a wuss like me and are afraid of splinters, then gloves have superpowers. I fear two things at work: splinters and paper cuts… ouchies!

Instructions: 

1. Prep the branch: clean it with water.
2. Sand the branch for a smooth finish.
3. Seal the branch using polyurethane paint or spray.
4. Cut two 6-inch pieces of twine (for ceilings that are 8 to 10 feet high) and tightly tie the strips on each end of the branch and you now have a rod.
5. Attach (with a knot) the other ends of the twine to the ceiling with hooks (ideally, closed-end hooks so the twine doesn’t slip out), and now you have a hanging rod.

Aim to sand every single area of the branch, and make sure it is safely attached to the ceiling (remember: Anchors are our friends). Determine a height that is comfortable for your easy reach.

Then display those goo goo gaa gaa adorable baby clothes.

If you have any leftover twine, wrap the ends to give it even more of a decorative cool look.

Make sure you don’t get a twig, but a thick branch. Look for one that is similar in size to your closet clothing rod so your hangers fit. Oh, when selecting a branch I suggest you also look for one that has smaller branches because you can turn those into a hook to use as a valet (where you “park” the clothes that you will use the next day). Do you see the hook below? It looks like a thumbs up, huh?

Since baby clothes are so super adorable why not (1) display the baby outfits while (2) having easy access to them. Hmmm, this also works for adult clothing, we just need thicker branches.
