DIY wooden box centerpiece is an easy way to bring the outdoors in

The best home decor projects are the ones that will work year-round in your home. Create your own wooden box centerpiece that can easily transition from season to season by switching out what’s inside.

Supplies:

  • Wood boards
  • Tape measure
  • Saw
  • Nail gun or hammer and nails
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood stain
  • Rag
  • Plants or other filler

Directions:

1. Measure and cut

Measure and cut the boards to your desired length. I cut 2 pieces that were 26 inches long and 2 pieces that were 24 inches long to form the sides of the box. Then I measured and cut a piece that was 24-1/2 inches by 4 inches to fit the bottom of the box. If you don’t have a saw or would prefer not to do the cutting, your hardware store will cut the boards for you.

2. Build the box

Grab your nail gun or a hammer and some nails and start nailing the boards together. I opted not to fill the nail holes because I wanted a more rustic look, but if you prefer, you could fill the holes with some stainable wood filler.

3. Sand the edges

To add to the rustic look, I used some sandpaper to round out all of the edges and corners of the wooden box before staining it.

4. Stain the wood

Use an old rag to apply the stain to the wood. I opted for 2 coats for a slightly darker stain.

5. Fill the centerpiece

Once the stain has dried, fill the centerpiece. I chose to use 5 inexpensive plants from Ikea, but you could use anything to fill it, including Mason jars and large artificial flowers. Get creative with changing it out and adding different embellishments as the seasons change.
