Mom sheds: The latest trend for moms seeking a little space of her own

Move over man caves, there’s a new personal sanctuary that doesn’t involve guys or children. Moms across the country are looking for ways to add this popular design trend in their homes.

I love my husband and sons — I really do, but sometimes mama needs to take a time out. There are days when I’d like to use the bathroom by myself, eat my food without having to give half away to another person or have at least 10 minutes of quiet time. Is that really too much to ask?

Rather than continue my search for the ultimate hiding space in my home, I have another idea in mind.

A mom shed.

Perhaps you’ve heard of these little slices of heaven that provide moms with a private space for themselves? Should you happen to have space in your backyard for a mini retreat, by all means, create one. You deserve it!

Unlike a traditional man cave, a mom shed is typically a detached home addition. Now that might sound super expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, you can transform an old tool shed into your own private haven. If you’re DIY savvy, you might want to consider building your own shed. No worries if you aren’t great with a tool belt (I’m not) as you can purchase a standard shed, or have one custom-built to fit your needs.

I personally want to build a little cottage in my backyard that has a front porch (if I’m lucky, I can fit a rocking chair) and just enough room for a home office and craft supplies. While I’m dreaming up the perfect retreat, let’s throw in a powder room and mini kitchen so I can whip up a quick meal without having to go to the main house. After all, isn’t the point not to interact with your household for a period of time?

In case you haven’t noticed, you can just about create whatever you want when it comes to a mom shed. Every mother has different needs and thus, needs a tailored space to meet those requirements. Some would like an area that provides enough room to craft or prep their garden. Others just want a place for themselves with a door that locks.

Eventually those little faces known as your children might wear you down with their constant pleas to come inside. Of course you can let them in — though you aren’t considered a horrible mother for saying no on occasion.

Whether you call it a mom shed, “she” shed, garden shed or whatever else comes to mind, at the end of the day, it’s a personal sanctuary that affords you the chance to catch your breath.
