For the first time in 40 years, the White House allows photos, so you should totally go there and take tons of selfies.
According to the White House’s website, “As of July 1, 2015, Smartphones and compact cameras with a lens no longer than 3 inches (stills only) are permitted on the public tour route as long as their use does not interfere with other guests’ enjoyment of the tour.”

Now, keep in mind you cannot just walk up to the White House and expect to be allowed to tour the building and grounds. You have to submit your request through your Member of Congress no less than 21 days before your visit — you can submit it as much as six months before. Word on the street says that the earlier you do this, the better your chances are of getting your request approved.
While you can bring your cellphone and a small camera, you still cannot bring in the following items:
- Video recorders
- Handbags, book bags, backpacks or purses
- Food or beverages, tobacco products, personal grooming items (i.e., makeup, lotion, etc.)
- Strollers
- Any pointed objects
- Aerosol containers
- Guns, ammunition, fireworks, electric stun guns, mace, martial arts weapons/devices or knives of any size
