It may be the end of the week, but the news never stops. Luckily, we’ve broken it all down into bite-sized pieces for you. Here are the top stories everyone will be talking about today:
1. Time flies
This weekend is the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. To commemorate the event, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton will all be in New Orleans over the course of the next few days. Obama arrived yesterday and spoke at a community center in the Lower Ninth Ward, where he praised rebuilding efforts and told the crowd, “You inspire me. Folks have been watching what happened here and they’ve seen a reflection of the very best of the American spirit.” Hurricane Katrina claimed 1,833 lives and wiped out several Louisiana towns. The people have done a tremendous job recovering, but they’ve still got a long way to go before the scars of the devastation begin to fade. — NBC News

2. Whelp, there’s always Jimmy Johns
By now, we’ve all heard about Jared Fogle from Subway, his skeevy assistant who was arrested on child pornography charges, and the fact that Fogle is allegedly going to plead guilty to similar charges. Well, things just got even uglier. Cindy Mills, a former franchisee, claims she warned Subway about Fogle in 2008. Mills says Fogle told her about attractions to kids and allegedly admitted to soliciting underage prostitutes. She contacted a former CEO about her concerns, but says he swept them under the rug. Subway terminated their relationship with Fogle as soon as everything went public and has been feigning ignorance since his arrest. If Mills’ story turns out to be true, it might be the end of the line for them. — Jezebel
3. Faker than fake
It turns out those viral videos that claim Planned Parenthood is selling fetal tissue are even faker than we imagined. Planned Parenthood hired an independent research firm to investigate the validity of the footage. The team analyzed all of the videos — even the supposedly “full, unedited” ones — and found that all of them were missing large chunks of time and had multiple separate conversations spliced together to look like one continuous discussion. So far, almost a dozen videos have leaked and they’ve caused a massive uproar. Republicans in Congress even tried to defund Planned Parenthood. Hopefully this analysis will help more people understand just how misleading the footage really is. — Huffington Post

4. Not again
Savannah State University was on lockdown overnight as authorities investigated a fatal shooting near the student union. A man was reportedly shot in the shoulder during an argument and police were called. The campus was placed on alert until authorities could confirm an active shooter was no longer present. This tragedy comes only one day after the horrific shooting in Virginia. — The Guardian
5. Thinking outside the box
A new Instagram update allows users to upload full-size photos instead of cropping them down to perfect squares. Instagram made the change after discovering at least 20 percent of its users use letter boxing — uploading a full-sized image with white or black bars on the top or sides to make it fit into the square template. Now we can crop images to our liking or leave them alone entirely and the thumbnails will still show up as squares on our profiles so everything looks nice and neat. Picture perfect. — Refinery29
6. Finally
Beloved songbird Adele is releasing a new album in November. Her last album, 21, was released in 2011 and has sold a whopping 30 million copies worldwide. Fans have been waiting for a follow up ever since. Rumor has it Adele has worked on the new album with famed producers Danger Mouse, Max Martin, Ryan Tedder and Tobias Jesso Jr. There’s no word on what direction she’s taken with the new material, but there’s little doubt it will be fantastic. Add it to your Christmas list if you can wait that long. — Vulture

7. LOL
Yesterday during a campaign event, presidential hopeful Ben Carson said there is no war on women, but there “may be a war on what’s inside of women.” You hear that, ladies? It’s not you they have a problem with; it’s your internal organs! Just become a hollow shell like a Barbie doll and then everything will be cool. Check out the video of his, um, interesting opinions if you need a hearty Friday morning laugh:
