What people around the world really think of Americans (VIDEO)

America. Land of the free and home of the brave… or so we like to sing. The rest of the world, however, sings a different tune when it comes to America’s attributes.

In a video titled America Around the World, Cut.com asks people around the globe what they think about Americans. Things started out on a positive note. “Paradise,” answers Addis Ababa of Ethiopia, the first woman interviewed. Things go downhill after that, with people noting obesity, greed and ignorance as American traits.

Of course, they’re stereotypes and nothing Americans haven’t heard before, but as one woman asks, “Are they stereotypes if they’re true?” With more than two-thirds of our nation categorized as overweight or obese and alarmingly low levels of geographic knowledge (in a 2006 study, 63 percent of Americans aged 18-24 couldn’t find Iraq on a map), they have a point in many regards.

There are so many amazing things about our country and our people, but this video is a pretty stark reminder that we have a lot of work to do — as individuals and as a nation. We remain the land of the free and the home of the brave; now we just have to focus on ways to make those virtues shine more brightly than our nation’s propensity for drive-thru food.
