An inspiring Facebook post has gone viral for all the right reasons. The message, posted by Adrienne Langley, is a photo of a purse filled with snacks and sanitary items. It carries the simple caption: “Have a purse at home you don’t want? Fill it with snacks, sanitary and hygiene products. Next time you see a homeless woman, let her have it!”
See? We told you this was the best idea!

It has been shared over 41,000 times so far on Facebook. That’s likely because it has really struck a chord with women everywhere. On the idea of giving sanitary items, one commenter had this to say, “Donating boxes of menstrual products to shelters is always useful and needed! I know not all women have periods and not all people with periods are women but it’s helpful for sure, these are expensive products that are needed regularly and rarely donated.”
Her single post has inspired other suggestions from commenters:
“I save hotel soaps, shampoos etc., and donate it all to a local women’s shelter,” says Alex D. And Deborah C added that she “collects up all the baby items, and lots of cosmetic and personal care items I have sent to me and donate them to a local shelter for young mothers a couple of times a year. Not an organised thing, but a super easy thing for folks to do.”

In addition, organizations serving women’s needs are always looking for non-monetary donations. Dress for Success is a global not-for-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. They accept new and gently worn women’s wear and accessories.
The Shoebox Project is also a great non-profit to consider. Donors are asked to fill a shoebox with little luxuries they would enjoy, to decorate the box and drop it off. Each shoebox is filled with items valued at $50 that a woman would enjoy but would not splurge on for herself in difficult times. These shoeboxes brighten the holiday season and let the women know they are special and not forgotten.
