This week, I’ve started my dream job at SheKnows as a newly minted Experts editor. I somehow am fortunate enough to spend my days being part of a platform that gives women a voice to be heard and to show the world the everyday things that make us shine. I can’t wait to begin not only working with, but learning from all of our amazing Experts.
Already, I’ve discovered that when I’m throwing a party and pulling my hair out trying to figure out my time management, there’s an Expert post to give me “5 Holiday party timing tips every experienced host knows.” After exhausting my bookshelf and despairing that I’ll never find something to read, an Expert can give me great recommendations on “How I learned to love historical fiction.” Every day, our Experts are creating content that we can not only relate to, but use to help make our lives a little bit better and easier.
That’s why I’m so pleased to be a part of a team that is dedicated to helping women empowering women — because if we don’t do it for ourselves, no one else will. I don’t believe that the only women who should be heard are those who shout the loudest, but rather that the Everywoman who has something to say or has a new way of doing things and is willing to share her experience and expertise should be listened to equally. Many of those reasons are why I started my own site, Literally, Darling to give 20-something and millennial women a platform to help guide them through the rough patches in such a transitional time in their life without judgment or preaching. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with aspiring young writers who have often never been published, but have something to say and are looking for a community that supports them in that endeavor. And that’s what I’ve created on Literally, Darling — a safe space and haven on the Internet to run amok and have fun, but also to provide a hand reaching out saying, “It’s OK, we’ve all been here before, you can get through this.”
SheKnows was an obvious next step for me as it allows me to work with women to put their voice on an infinitely larger platform that has enormous reach across the Internet. The Experts program’s ability to amplify life experiences, tips and advice that might normally only be shared amidst friends allows it to be instantly crowd sourced. We get to be more than writers and editors typing into the abyss, we are forming a community of peers to learn from, to share with and grow together as women. It’s a powerful thing that brings women together and gives them the chance to help one another and be a source of support. I believe the Experts program gives us the ability to share our expertise and offer a helping hand to those around us, and I can’t wait to immerse myself in this incredible community.
I introduced myself on the Experts Facebook page as well, and if you haven’t had a chance to join that, make sure to pop by and say hello. I’d love nothing more than for us to get to know and inspire one another.
