This Japanese couch bed will transform the way you nap

Every so often an invention comes along that is so ingenious that you wonder how you ever survived without it. The Japanese heated bed table is one of those very inventions.

The masterful piece of ingenuity is called a Kotatsu and it’s responsible for how some people in Japan keep themselves warm in the colder months. It’s also one of the reasons why they can stay in the comfort of their beds all day and not feel guilty about it.

I’ve been waiting for someone to invent this bed-couch-table my entire life and I’m glad to see I’ve lived to see the day.

Taking a look at the photos featured on a popular Japanese online store, the Kotatsu simply looks like a coffee table that someone has decided to fall asleep under, probably after some wine time.

But it is so much more than that. Basically, it’s a low-sitting couch with a table in the centre and a blanket draped over the sides. It sounds so simple, almost too simple. But therein lies the magic of this not-nearly-popular-enough home decor piece.

Underneath the table is the pièce de résistance, an electric heater. An electric heater! Which, of course, keeps your toes, legs and the rest of your body cosy and warm, while the table allows you to get along with your day’s work, as long as said work doesn’t involve you moving, walking or getting up to pee.

Seriously, though, this has got to be one of the best set ups for a lazy weekend, doing nothing but drinking pots of tea and reading all those books you never have time to stick your nose into. Problem solved, book lovers, tea drinkers and maybe wine-os, too. This one’s for you.

And it appears that even our furry little friends think this one is a hit.

What do you think? Is it time to get rid of the couch and buy a Kotatsu? Let us know below.
