How reflecting on forgiveness changed my life

How soon should one forgive? How soon should one forget? Is it possible to forgive and forget?

Perhaps you would consider it a nightmare to experience cruelty, disrespect and torture. To be humiliated, lied to, maltreated, embarrassed or worse abused, are not only unacceptable but inhumane.

All of us, in one way or another, may have gone through these ordeals. Some people can let it pass in time, but some won’t. The pain is embedded in their hearts and in their memories. How will you forgive someone who ruined your life and your future? How will you forget the pains of the past? Forgive and forget, it is easier said than done.

I revere those who are able to achieve resilience and are able to move on with their lives without any resentment.

Some people may find it too unrealistic, but it is something that we should aim to do. It is not easy, but it can be done.

We deserve to live a life filled with good memories, and we all deserve to be happy.

We won’t be able to move forward if we let ourselves become prisoners of hate and suffering. It is not our oppressors who carry the burden but us. Revenge can never be the solution to any of these. Justice will always be served, if not here but somewhere beyond. We don’t deserve a miserable life by keeping those bad memories alive. Let healing take place, make peace with our past and look forward to a better future. Some things had to be learned the hard way, unfortunately.

Let’s find a space in our hearts to be grateful — and after all the odds, to become stronger individuals. Life is short, and we only live once. Let us create a legacy that the next generation will thank us for.

To forgive and to forget is not an option, it is a choice. No matter what you do, at the end of the day, it is your life that matters. Would you choose to stay miserable for the rest of your life, or would you choose to leave everything behind, let go and move forward?
