Louise Scott recently turned 33 and 2015 marked the first year that she will be without an advent calendar. Instead she decided to get a big brown box and, from Dec. 1 to 24, every day she will fill it up with an item of food or toiletries to give to someone in need on Christmas Eve.
Scott shared her idea on Facebook and the post has since gone viral, with over 87,000 shares and more than 300 likes. What’s more, the comments show that Scott is not the only person who is feeling generous this year.
Karen Jane Brown wrote, “Wicked idea and I’m gonna join u in doing it!! [sic]” Elaine Breen echoed her sentiments, writing, “What a great idea! I would like to do this too does anyone know if there’s a shelter etc over north Tyneside?”

And Nadeen Simpson shared her thoughts. She wrote, “Such a great idea hun …. I’ve been collecting warm clothes for weeks for the soup kitchen in working in on Christmas day so if anyone has any i can pick up all donations are much appreciated xox. [sic]”
Scott also did an interview with Metro, in which she revealed that her goal was simply to create a bit of good news in the world.
“There’s been so much bad news in regards to the Paris attacks, that I thought it would be nice to show people that we do care and there is still lots of loving people around, (sic)” said Scott. “I never dreamed I would get the response I have. I will be getting everyone offering to help to drop stuff at my home just before Christmas Eve, and I will take some boxes around the streets and some to a homeless shelter.”

It’s a beautiful idea and one that will hopefully encourage others to do the same. Forgoing a few chocolates in favour of helping someone else is what Christmas is all about, no?
