It’s the end of the week, but the news never stops. Here are the top stories everyone will be talking about:
1. Wrong move(s)
Yesterday the Senate made a few big moves. They voted in favor of a bill that would overturn key provisions in Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood — two things that ensure the bill will end up on Obama’s desk for a veto. They also voted against two gun control proposals put forward by Democrats. The two measures would have expanded background checks for guns purchased at gun shows and online and prevented people on the terror watch list from buying a gun. Just another glorious example of our congressional leaders making bad choices. — Washington Post

2. G.I. Jane
Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced yesterday that all military combat roles are now open to women. Previously, women were excluded from about 10 percent of available military jobs, including things like driving tanks, shooting missiles and leading covert operations. Carter emphasized that effectiveness is the most important thing in combat, and the most qualified soldiers should get the jobs, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation. — The New York Times
3. Facepalm
The GOP presidential candidates spoke at a Republican Jewish Coalition forum and it did not go well. Ben Carson repeatedly said “hummus” instead of “Hamas”; Jim Gilmore talked about watching Schindler’s List the night before; and John Kasich said his mom told him if he ever wants a really good friend he should look for someone Jewish (whatever that means). Donald Trump stole the show by invoking a series of offensive stereotypes, including saying, “I’m a negotiator, like you folks,” and telling them he doesn’t want their money. 4. A scary situation
Chennai, India, is getting the worst rainfall the country has seen in over 100 years, and it’s creating a major disaster situation. More than 250 people have been killed and thousands have been evacuated as severe flooding envelops the city. Chennai is home to dozens of budding IT firms that have been forced to temporarily close due to the floods. Even worse? The rain is supposed to continue into next week. — Accuweather.com
5. When you wish upon a website
If you’re on the hunt for your Prince (or Princess) Charming, there’s a new place for you to bippity-boppity-boo up some dates. It’s called Mouse Mingle, and it’s a new dating site especially for adults who are “obsessed” with all things Disney. The site was created by a former Disneyland Railroad engineer, who says it’s difficult to find women who love Disney as much as he does. 6. RIP
Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland has died. The 48-year-old passed away in his sleep while on tour with his latest band, Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts. He formerly performed with Velvet Revolver and a number of other groups. He also struggled with substance abuse problems, which contributed to Stone Temple Pilots’ 2003 breakup. Weiland was immensely talented, and he’ll be greatly missed. — Fox
