8 Reasons you need an area rug right now

When it comes to home decor, few pieces are more versatile than an area rug. It’s a total multitasker, capable of enhancing style and hiding imperfections in one chic fell swoop. In fact, it’s my firm belief that everyone should own at least one area rug, and I’ll tell you why.

1. To tie the room together

Area rugs come in virtually every size, color, pattern and material one could possibly imagine — which makes it easy to find the area rug soul mate for any given space. You can use your area rug as the bold focus of your room, or you can use it to unify your color schemes. It just makes everything make more sense.

2. Cleaning it is less of a hassle

So your kid crushed a cracker on the carpet. Or your dog decided it was her personal mission in life to shred a teddy bear into a mound made of a million tiny pieces and creepily cute detached eyeballs. If you don’t have an area rug, the song-and-dance that must ensue is an elaborate production involving a broom, a dust pan, a trash bag and perhaps even a mop. Pshh. With an area rug, all you’ve gotta do is bust out the trusty vacuum.

3. It anchors your furniture

Walking into a large room without an area rug can feel a little bit like walking into a middle-school dance — there are several small groups lining the perimeter of the room looking unsure of what to do. An area rug connects everything and makes it feel nice and cohesive. Alas, if only there had been an area rug at all those awkward middle-school dances.

4. It’s like artwork for your floors

Area rugs are often so beautiful, it’s seriously tempting to actually hang rugs like the ones from Value City Furniture’s Sonoma Bennett Collection on the wall and admire them as though they are gallery pieces. I like to walk through rug emporiums sometimes with their huge hanging area rugs and pretend I’m at MOMA (hey, I don’t get out much). It’s genius, because you get the impact of upscale art at a fraction of the price.

5. Sound control

It’s said that some people march to the beat of their own drum, but sometimes it sounds like your kids are literally marching to the beat of drums. If you have hardwood floors, you could possibly set up folding chairs and start charging admission for the concert. Fortunately, area rugs can work wonders muffling sound — especially with a thick rug pad.

6. It’s portable

It can be hard to leave behind a home you’ve grown sentimentally attached to. Or, you know, one with amazing floors you hate to bid adieu. Parting is such sweet sorrow and all. An area rug can lessen the blow, though, because it’s portable. You don’t have to say goodbye, only “see you later.”

7. Real talk: it just feels good

Who doesn’t love to take their shoes off and sink their toes into the plush piling of a good area rug? There’s something so cozy and welcoming about having that kind of softness underfoot. Or under-butt. OK, so I just made up that word, but you know what I mean — a comfy area rug serves as a great buffer between your butt (or your knees) and the hard floor when you’re playing with your kids. Nothing can curtail a make-believe tea party faster than a bruised tailbone from plopping down too hard.

8. They’re foolproof

You don’t have to be Candice Olson or David Bromstad to make your home look like a million bucks with an area rug. You can put an area rug virtually anywhere and it will look amazing and elevate the entire space. It’ll even make your kids’ half-masticated crackers on the floor look better. They’re universally flattering, like your favorite pair of yoga pants. Yes, please!
