Ikea recalls hundreds of thousands of ceiling lamps for dangerous reason

Ikea, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, has issued a widespread recall of two varieties of its ceiling lamps

Do you have a ceiling lamp recently purchased from Ikea? You might want to check to see if it’s part of this extensive recall. The retailer says that around 840,000 ceiling lamps (two different models) were sold in the U.S., and an additional 427,000 were sold in Canada — and they all need to come back.

The reason? The lamps have the potential to slip out of their clips and fall to the ground. As they are constructed of glass, this poses a major laceration hazard. Worldwide, the company has received 224 reports of falling ceiling lamps along with 11 reports of injuries.

The two models included in this recall are called HYBY and LOCK. Both lamps feature domed, white, frosted glass shades and three plastic clips that attach the shade to steel electrical lamp housings.

The HYBY has a shade that measures 15 inches in diameter and is decorated with four opaque concentric lines. This particular lamp housing holds two light bulbs. The type number for the HYBY lamp is T1011. It’s located, with the model name, on a label attached to the electrical lamp housing. HYBY lamps were sold from October 2012 through January 2016 for about $13.

The LOCK’s shade measures 10 inches in diameter, and it holds one light bulb. The LOCK’s type number is T0201, and it was sold from November 2002 through January 2016 for about $5.

What you need to do: Remove the ceiling lamps from your home immediately, and take them back to your local Ikea store for a full refund. The retailer says you are not required to provide proof of purchase — just bring in the lamp, and receive your refund.
