Most of us try to avoid eye contact when we see a homeless person or we toss them a few coins in our haste to get to our destination. However many of the people living on the street are kind-hearted and unbelievably generous and one woman has reminded us all of this fact.

Nicole Sedgebeer found herself stranded in an unfamiliar city last week when she missed the last train home from Euston after a night out. She was about to burst into tears but a homeless man came to her rescue. She decided to share the touching story on Facebook in the hope of dispelling the unsavoury stigma and prejudice that too often surrounds homelessness.
Taking to Facebook, Sedgebeer penned a lengthy post about her night and how a man named Mark took care of her.
“I hope this story makes people look twice when they see a homeless person,” she began. “Last night I missed my last train home and when I finally got to Euston to wait till the morning, the station was locked. Just as I was about to burst into drunken tears I met my homeless friend Mark. He said he would take me to a cafe that was open as it was too dangerous to walk by myself. He left me after a coffee and a chat and explained that he had to go get his sleeping bag but he would be back at 5 to walk me back to the station. (Me being a typical bitch didn’t believe he would come back) It got past 5 and he was a no show.”
She continued, “As I got round the corner my homeless friend Mark was running down the street towards me. Not only did he turn up but he had to get a bus to come get me. This man who I probably would of avoided eye contact with if he asked for spare change, completely changed such a negative event into the most eye opening event in my life. Mark you are one special man, I will never look down on a homeless person again. This was also his first ever selfie! [sic]”

What could have been an awful ending to her night turned out to be an eye-opener and a brilliant way to raise awareness for those living rough on the streets. Sedgebeer’s post has been shared almost 14,000 times and the post is littered with comments from people who have been touched by her experience. One in particular stands out:
“It amazes me that people who have been through hell and probably have near to nothing to their name would do literally anything to help someone,” a commenter wrote, adding a poignant comment on society, “where as people who haven’t had any troubles in there life probably would of just walked on by and possibly laughed or judged, it’s horrible but true. [sic]”
But perhaps the most moving part of this entire experience is when Sedgebeer asked Mark why he was willing to help her to which he replied, “it was a fathers duty to get another mans daughter home safe. [sic]”

If you want to give back to the homeless community, there are countless charities trying to tackle homelessness and build supportive relationships for those who find themselves without a decent home. These include The Salvation Army, Shelter and Barnardo’s.
