Airbnb has hosted people in a range of quirky locations as part of their Night At series. They’ve previously offered a luxury apartment/cable car, 9,000 feet in the air above ski slopes; a VIP suite above the Chicago Bull’s home court and in a massive boat moored on Ellis Island.
Their latest competition, to win a stay inside the Paris Shark Aquarium, will hold guests in an underwater bedroom suspended inside the shark tank. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to live under the sea, Little Mermaid style, this is probably the closest you’ll ever get.
The tank is 10 metres deep and is home to no less than 35 sharks. The prize includes an introduction to the sharks and “an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of sharks: how they live, why they’re so misunderstood, and their importance to the ocean’s ecosystem.”
The Airbnb listing dryly notes that there are “pets” on the property.
The host of the stay is Fred Buyle, a self-identified “shark enthusiast,” a freediver, and a keen photographer.

If this is something you’d be up for you should know that there are some catches to staying in the aquarium. No Wi-Fi is available in the tank. Guests are also instructed not to take selfies after dark as the flash disturbs the sharks’ sleeping patterns — and we’re guessing the less the sharks are disturbed, the better.
Airbnb advises potential guests not to view Jaws before sleeping in the tank. “They’re kinder than you think!” they insist.
According to the International Shark Attack File, the risk of actually dying from a shark attack over your entire lifetime is 1 in 3,748,067. Data from the University of Oxford’s medical school also shows that you’re 93 times more likely to die from contact with a hot water tap than from a shark attack.
In offering this opportunity Airbnb says they hope “to create awareness beyond the scientific community and change the way the wider consumer audience think about sharks.”
For shark admirers, and those brave enough to overcome their fears, you can enter the contest until 11:59 p.m. Central European Time on April 3. You will need to be over 18 and medically fit to stay in the room. No need to worry if you aren’t local to Paris because Airbnb will fly you there from any location in the world.
