Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and, according to tradition, must be celebrated with a cookout.
Since the whole point of a cookout is the food, there’s no point in letting your guests wonder what kind of feast is in store for them. Let them know what you’re serving with this easy and festive DIY chalkboard menu. It’s a cinch to make and will take less than 30 minutes to complete.
Supplies
- Chalkboard paint
- Picture frame (with wood or MDF back)
- Ribbon
- Chalk markers
- Paintbrush
- Double-sided tape (not shown)

Step 1. Paint
Disassemble the picture fame. Carefully remove the glass, and set it aside. Next, apply the chalkboard paint to the frame’s backing. The paint works best on a wood or MDF backing, so make sure when shopping for a frame that it has one of the two. I got this square frame at a chain craft store on clearance for $3. Apply at least two coats of chalkboard paint (to the side that will be facing front in the frame).
Step 2. Reassemble
Once the paint is thoroughly dry, add the backing back to the frame. You can use the glass in the frame again if you want. I decided to skip it. It’s easier to change up the menu without having to take the glass out every time.

Step 3. Decorate
Make a simple bow with the ribbon to put on the side of the frame. This is a simple way to change the theme of the menu to accommodate any type of festivity. The double-sided tape makes it easy to switch out styles.
Step 4. Write the menu
I used chalkboard markers to write my menu. I like them because the writing looks cleaner and doesn’t smudge. To remove the marks, you will need to use a dampened cloth.
This project is so simple to create and can last through years of holidays and events by just swapping out the ribbons.
