Dogs… they’re part of the family, and like any good parent, we like to think long and hard about what we’re going to call our fur babies for the rest of their lives. Rover just released their top dognames of 2016, and it is full of surprises. Interestingly, the top dog names of 2016 follow a lot of cultural trends we saw this year. Check out the most popular names below from pop culture, nature and even food categories.

Interesting dog name stats
- 28 percent of all dog names are common human names
- Celebrity baby names (think: Apple and Shiloh) rose 8 percent in 2016
- 53 percent of dog owners (including 75 percent of millennials) named their dog after a pop culture character
Most popular pop culture names
It was a big year for Harry Potter fans and it shows in Rover’s report. Harry Potter-themed names increased 10 percent in 2016. Here are the top three.

Game of Thrones fans didn’t want to be shown up by HP lovers. They came out in full force when it was time to name their new pups this year. In fact, GoT-themed names increased over 16 percent. Here are the three most popular.

There were some other noteworthy pop culture stats in Rover’s report:
- Names like Eleven and Barb (Stranger Things) are up nearly 12 percent
- X-Files-themed names rose 10 percent this year

Food names
Because people love food just as much as their pets, they often name them after their favorite foods. Check out a few of these interesting food-themed name stats:
- Dogs named Kale are most popular in Portland, Oregon
- Dogs named Quinoa are most popular in LA
- Coffee-themed names (think: Kona, Espresso, Mocha) are declining nationally, but continue to rise in the home of Starbucks, Seattle, Washington
Junk food and alcohol-themed names rose 2 percent. Maybe because of all the election stress? Here are the top junk food and alcohol names of 2016:

- Whiskey
While Kale and Quinoa remain popular in Oregon and California, overall, health food names declined 17 percent. Here are the three most popular health food-themed doggy names:

Nature- and animal-themed names grew 8 percent in 2016. But the top three spots went to other animals:

- Moose
- Tiger
