Fixer Upper is coming to a close, and while I low-key can’t even with that fact, it has given me a reason to binge-watch every available episode while I try not to mourn. And as I watched, I noticed something interesting.
When the show first started, Joanna’s style was totally farmhouse chic. You’ve heard the shiplap jokes, and they’re made for a good reason — girl could not stop slapping shiplap on basically every flat surface of a house when she first started the show.

She also used a lot more “ye olde farmhouse” accessories in the earlier seasons of the show, with random pieces of refurbished farm equipment acting as decor.
Barn door? Put it in the living room. Old window frame? Above the fireplace, of course!

I mean, this one literally has a sign that says, “Farm,” in it.
But over time, her style has shifted. Maybe it’s because she became more immersed in the larger design world thanks to the reach of the show, or maybe she’s making a concerted effort to keep up with trends, but these days, it seems like you’re more likely to spot mid-century modern, Scandinavian, industrial and even geometric styles in her decor than you are repurposed horse blankets or antique pitchforks hanging on the walls.

Her style has definitely shifted, but honestly, I still love it. You can tell she’s got talent to be able to update her decorating sense while still making every project look effortless. Fixer Upper may be coming to a close, but at least this proves the Gaineses have staying power. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
