10 Mother’s Day Gifts That Will Always Make Your Mom Smile

Where would we be without our moms? I don’t know about you, but I defer to the wisdom of my mother nearly every day. I call her about everything from my kids’ health to my own financial planning.

We all want to make our moms (and other beloved mothers in our lives) feel special. This hope manifests every day, of course, but we’re especially mindful each year when Mother’s Day rolls around.

It may seem impossible to pick the perfect gift for your mom. And, let’s be real, no one wants to be the person who gives a present that winds up discreetly tucked away in a dark closet somewhere. You want to give the moms you love something they will love.

Fortunately, there are a few go-to gifts that are total wins for Mother’s Day. Consider bestowing one or more of the following on the busy, wonderful moms in your life.

1. The gift of fashion

For many women, nothing beats a new outfit. A cozy sweater on a chilly day, a pair of lounge pants for relaxing at home, a comfy tunic that looks great for work or dinner on the town — whatever your mom’s personal style, something new to wear is sure to put a smile on her face.

2. Something for the kitchen

Sharing food is sharing love. Lots of treasured family moments happen at the dinner table. If cooking is one of your mom’s passions, gifting her with a new kitchen gadget is an ideal way to feed her soul. Some moms prefer brunch with cocktails or breakfast in bed on their special day. Regardless, you can’t go wrong with the gift of good food.

3. A chance to put her feet up

After a busy day, an evening of relaxing on the couch with loved ones can be just the thing. This Mother’s Day, why not invite Mom to take it easy for a while? Spruce up the living room with new throw pillows and blankets, order a pizza and settle in for a fabulous family movie night.

4. Spa treatments

Everyone needs to rejuvenate now and then. If your mom is due for some pampering, give her the luxury treatment at the spa or at home. After a bubble bath and a good dose of hair care, beauty treatments and aromatherapy, she’ll be ready to take on the world again in no time.

5. A beautiful bauble

There’s a reason jewelry is a tried-and-true gift for mothers — it’s classic. If you really want to go the extra mile to show her how much she means to you, select a necklace and earrings in a color that matches her favorite outfit.

6. A family photo session

Flowers wilt away, but photos of her family will endure for years and years. It can be hard to wrangle the family for a snapshot on any given day. But who’s going to say no if you arrange the shoot as a gift for Mom? Brownie points if you hire a “set stylist” to assist with hair and wardrobe.

7. A subscription you know she’ll use

Subscription services offer practically anything you can think of these days: tea, magazines, gym memberships, cheese, movies, makeup and (my personal favorite) wine. The list goes on, so spend a few minutes selecting and setting up one that’s geared entirely to her tastes.

8. Housekeeping

Keeping the house clean is a thankless task that never ends. Having someone swoop in and take care of it for you is priceless. This year, show Mom you love her by running the vacuum, doing the laundry and washing the dishes — or hire a service to come over and do the job.

9. Tickets

With the busyness of mothering, she might not get out of the house as much as she used to. Evenings are often spent sewing on buttons, packing lunches and tucking the little ones into bed. Give your mom tickets to her favorite new play, then hire a babysitter and send her out for a night on the town.

10. A gift card

Don’t worry, this isn’t a cop-out. It’s really one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give. Gift cards never go out of style, and any size is the right size. When she’s picking out a pair of shoes or a new book to spend her gift card bucks on, she’ll be thankful you gave her the opportunity to decide for herself.

Whatever way you choose to make Mom feel special this year, remember this: There’s no wrong way to tell her you love her. Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.
