Our pets are a huge part of our family. They bring us so much joy and love, and of course, we give it back twice as much. When you’re a pet owner, you try to do everything to ensure they live their best lives, and live for as long as they can. And a big part of that is giving them food that is clean, nutritious, and makes them feel good; and that’s where Freshpet comes in.
Freshpet is all about making sure your pets feel happy and healthy, and now, they’re partnering with superstar Meghan Trainor for the brand’s first-ever apparel collection, which includes a “Dog Mom” and “Dog Dad” sweatshirt, and all the proceeds will go to pet charities. (You can shop the entire collection HERE!)
Trainor has made a name for herself for being unapologetic in everything she does, inspiring others to do the same. She’s not only a beloved Grammy-winning songstress, but she’s a proud mom of two boys, and four female dogs! For those who don’t know, she and her husband, Daryl Sabara, have two wonderful sons named Riley, born in Feb 2021, and Barry, born in July 2023. As we said, along with being a boy mom, she’s a mom to four sweet dogs named Biggie, Ruby, Lilo, and Soca!
Recently, Trainor sat down with SheKnows to talk about everything from her collaboration with Freshpet, parenthood, and how her sons bond with their four dogs. Now, when you sit down with her, it’s like you’re sitting down with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time, eager to catch up on everything. There’s a true warmth to her, and to the answers she gave, one you may not typically expect from an A-lister. You can tell she truly loves her family, and loves that she can use her platform to help those, whenever she can.
Below, see all that Trainor told SheKnows about when it comes to her sweet collab with Freshpet:
SheKnows: Can you tell me why you partnered with Freshpet for this collection?
Meghan Trainor: Oh, because my dogs are obsessed with this food and I prioritize feeding our pets with real, fresh food. So I’ve always been looking for a company like this for my babies. Then, when we wanted to collab, I had the idea of, like, ‘Dude, I need to write you guys a song. Like it should be, I’m a dog mom, and if you want people to know the name more, we gotta sing Freshpet in the song.’ I literally started to write it in our initial meeting, and then they came up with this incredible idea of making a sweatshirt that says “Dog Mom” or “Dog Dad.” It’s such a beautiful collab because now we’re gonna sell ’em, and all the proceeds benefit animal shelters out there in need. It aligns with all my beliefs about my four beautiful dogs.
SK: So, are you the one that does most of the food prep and feeding for your dogs?
MT: Actually, my husband does because he gets up before me. So he gets up and, like, he always feeds the dogs, lets ’em go out to poop and then feed them. Then I come down with the babies and then I’m on baby patrol and trying to get there. So yeah, it’s chaotic at my house.
SK: How have pets changed your life?
MT: They give you so much love, and they’re the best companions. They taught me responsibility, and they helped prepare me for having babies. Like getting up and taking care of a life, you know? So that helped a lot.
SK: What is a goal you have to make sure that you, your kids, your pets, and everyone else are just living a healthier, happier life?
MT: A goal I have: I need to learn how to eat like that so I can live forever. And so that’s why, like what my dogs eat is very important to me, too. And because I want them to live forever and ever. Before we got pregnant, my husband was obsessed with reading ingredients and so now we read the ingredients on everything, especially our dog food. So that’s our goal: eating clean and eating real food.
SK: Do you have any plans to get more pets in the future?
MT: My husband is saying no. [But] Never say never, you know, who knows?
SK: So, are there any special pet-friendly activities you enjoy doing as a family?
MT: We always go on walks together, and Riley, my three-year-old, is strong enough to hold our little dogs. He loves being like, ‘Can I hold her?’ He’s really good at it. We walk around the neighborhood, and then my younger one, Barry, my one-year-old, he is obsessed with playing fetch with our Chihuahua Lilo. [It’]s like he’s having the best time of his life, and it’s the cutest, best thing to watch.
SK: Oh, with Halloween approaching, does your family have any really cute traditions, and do any of them involve your dogs?
MT: Yeah, I’ve dressed them up before. But we always dress up every year, and this year, we’re gonna do a Paw Patrol theme. So pretty excited about that. And literally, they’re all puppies. Oh my god, I didn’t even realize that. So yeah, he loves Paw Patrol. We’re all going to be different types of dogs.
SK: Now, speaking of your sons again, do your sons have a favorite song of yours?
MT: They always sing the Freshpet song. They love that one. And my younger brother produced it with me, so we always play it in the house because we’re so proud. But my youngest one started to booty dance. He started dancing recently, which is exciting. And then, then my 3-year-old, it’s the new song every day for him. He is a true Meghan Trainor fan. It’s weird. He loves “To The Moon” because he loves rocket ships, and he’s in the music video. So I think that’s his number one.
SK: So I know you’re on tour right now. Do you have a favorite moment so far with your kids while on tour?
MT: We’ve actually had animal shelters bring out puppies and kittens for adoption. My kids just loved playing with them and seeing them, and it was so beautiful and cute; and I hope they get adopted. Other than that, they just love the venues, they love the buses, and they have these recycling garbage trucks that they can ride on. That was like their favorite thing in life, riding down the hallways and going backstage with their headphones.
SK: Going back to being a superstar and a mom and a pet mom, do you have any mantras or tricks that you use to keep balance? I know it’s never a perfect balance, but do you have anything to help you balance at all?
MT: Therapy every Wednesday and I have a lot of help at my house. Like I constantly have family over. I have an incredible nanny who helps with the kids and the dogs, and I have an uncle who’s at my house every day who walks with dogs when we’re not there. Yeah, I just have a lot of friends and family that are constantly over. I don’t like being alone. I’m codependent, and that’s what makes life better.
