Don’t get us wrong. Ice-skating is fun, but sometimes, it feels like the only thing anyone wants to do on winter dates. But… it’s cold outside! There are a million people on the ice! And the children… dear God, so many children.
Instead, try one of these cozy date-night options the next time you’re looking for a romantic activity even in the thick of winter’s worst weather. You’ll still be embracing some of the unique opportunities the season has to offer without risking your date seeing you fall on your butt in front of a billion middle-schoolers who also didn’t know what to do in the cold.
1. Take a cooking class
When the weather outside is frightful, a cozy kitchen is one of the best places to be. It’s the season of entertaining and eating, so taking a cooking class with your date is a fun way to escape the weather outside, all while honing your comfort-food skills in a warm kitchen. Sparks will fly as you learn how to make a hearty beef bourguignon or hand-dipped chocolate truffles or brew your own beer together. For your next date, try to replicate the dish you made in class at home together.

2. Make a wreath
Nothing beats the smell of freshly cut pine boughs. Get into the holiday spirit with your sweetie by making a wreath together. You can often get pine boughs at your local Christmas tree lot, and wreath frames are inexpensive at most major craft stores. Put your signature touches on the wreath — traditional or humorously themed? Decide together! Then hang it on the front door. Every time you see it, you’ll be reminded of your romantic night.
3. Volunteer
This is the season of giving, so working together on a volunteer project is a great way to solidify your bond with each other and your community. If you’re in a new relationship, it’s also a great way to gauge what kind of person they are. That might sound cynical, but isn’t it important to be with someone who cares about giving back to the community and does it with a smile on their face?
4. Go coat shopping
Fun and flirty fashion shows are just as delightful in real life as they are in the movies. Go on a shopping trip with your love interest and see each other get bundled up in soft, warm garments that will make you want to cuddle. Now is the time for that cute “trying on silly winter hats” montage IRL!

5. Have a funny-bad holiday movie marathon
Between Hallmark, Lifetime and Netflix, cheesy holiday movies are a dime a dozen these days. Seek out those that sound the most ridiculous (there are literally hundreds of implausible plots to choose from), and then have fun heckling them as you cozy up on the couch Mystery Science Theater 3000-style. Bonus points if you make up your own drinking game — how about “drink every time you can tell this winter scene was shot on a lot in Southern California”?
